Our organisation

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak union body representing almost 2 million workers and their families.
Since our creation in 1927, the ACTU has spearheaded some of the most fundamental workplace struggles in Australia’s history.
The ACTU’s role as a peak body is to encourage workers to join their union, be a national voice for our movement, and advance and defend workers’ rights by co-ordinating union campaigns, representing workers at a range of government and non-government forums and to provide industrial, policy and other support to our affiliates.

The role

This position plays a key role in media liaison and strategic media management for the agenda of Australian Unions.

The role involves providing high level media support and advice, developing strategic and tactical media and communications plans in support of campaign and policy activities, leading the ACTU’s contribution and involvement in key campaign and issues based activities, the timely and accurate production and distribution of high quality media and communications materials, the coordination of media and campaign announcements, monitoring and tracking the media and external environment on a daily basis and providing high level support to the Leadership Group on all public affairs related issues.

The position is also responsible for the management of the media officer including their workload and professional development.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high level media support and advice to the ACTU leadership and spokespeople.
  • Management of the media team – currently one media officer.
  • Develop proactive media plans to support the objectives of the ACTU.
  • Manage incoming media inquiries, and ensure issues are appropriately internally managed, and that any media issues within the movement are appropriately raised with the ACTU Leadership.
  • Lead the Media team’s contribution and involvement in key campaign and issues-based activities.
  • Identify opportunities to raise the profile of the positions of the union movement, engage in public debates and prosecute the industrial, economic, social, and political agenda of Australian Unions.
  • Oversee and deliver high quality media and communications materials including press releases, talking points, media responses, opinion pieces, speeches, factsheets, and other information materials as required.
  • Plan and execute media announcements and campaign events as part of the organisation’s overall agenda.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of communications strategies under the leadership’s guidance and collegiately with other managers across the organisation.
  • Monitor and track the media and external environment daily to research and provide advice on relevant issues and identify both opportunities and threats.
  • Liaise with media including fielding requests, developing, and maintaining relationships with journalists as required and ensure media requests are effectively managed by the team.
  • Work collaboratively with other Work Centres and ACTU staff, to share content, analysis and media messages.
  • The position will at times need to perform duties outside of office hours and will require some interstate travel. The Media Manager and Media Officer share on-call responsibilities.

Benefits

The ACTU will offer the successful candidate a salary in the range of $110,481 - $129,067 dependant on skills and experience, along with an additional 15% superannuation, annual leave loading, working from home opportunities and generous leave arrangements (including up to 5 additional days of annual leave).
