About Us

Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNAC) is the Native Title representative group for the Nyiyaparli People, with approximately 400 current members. The Nyiyaparli People are the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara region. This area includes the Aboriginal communities of Jigalong and Parnpajinya, several pastoral leases, and significant mining operations. Locations within the Determination Area are places of particular significance to the Nyiyaparli people, including ceremonial sites, songlines, permanent pools, and natural resources.

Location/Working from Home

This role can be located at KNAC’s Hedland or Newman offices, or working from home with occasional travel to the Pilbara as required for the right candidate.

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Heritage Services Manager, the Heritage Advisor role serves as a key point of contact for heritage survey matters, facilitating communication between the Nyiyaparli people, proponents, and other stakeholders. The role involves conducting research, assessments, and consultations to support the development and implementation of heritage surveys and projects.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Conduct compliance and due diligence reviews of Heritage Notices under Native Title Agreements, including analysis of spatial data, maps, tenure, and previous surveys.
  • Provide advice to KNAC’s Cultural Advisor and Heritage Services team regarding heritage field engagements.
  • Support heritage consultants by clarifying Heritage Notice and Scope of Work requirements and providing necessary paperwork for heritage surveys.
  • Review and finalise draft survey deliverables and heritage approval documents.
  • Draft heritage summary documents and memoranda for Nyiyaparli committee meetings.
  • Participate in Heritage Committee and Working Group meetings as needed.
  • Maintain high standards of Work Health & Safety (WH&S), complying with all relevant policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential qualifications and experience include:

  • Previous experience working with Nyiyaparli and/or other Aboriginal people.
  • Tertiary qualifications (or relevant experience) in Cultural Heritage Management or a related field.
  • Proven experience in conducting heritage research, assessments, and community consultations.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and international standards related to cultural heritage.
  • Understanding and respect for the cultural protocols and sensitivities of the Indigenous community served by KNAC.
  • Ability to hold National Criminal Record Check.

Desirable qualifications and experience:

  • Proficiency in Indigenous languages commonly spoken in the community.
  • Familiarity with relevant technology and tools used in heritage research and documentation.
  • CPR Certificate (HLTAID009) or equivalent.
  • First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011) or equivalent.
  • First Aid in Remote Situations (HLTAID013).
