The Organisation

An exciting opportunity has become available to work for Barnardos, one of Australia’s leading children’s charities. Barnardos Australia builds relationships between children, young people, their families and the community. They advocate for children and young people and contribute to community knowledge about their issue.

The Role

Barnardos are looking for a part-time Youth Worker for 5 days per fortnight (Monday-Tuesday each week, and every second Friday). This will be a fixed term contract to July 2019 with the Youth Support Services Team based in Cranebrook, Penrith. Depending on the start date, this role could be between a 6-8 month contract.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Youth Worker will support and advocate on behalf of young people facing welfare, behavioural, drug and alcohol issues, social and protection issues. The Youth Worker will support young people on an individual or group basis, offering practical and emotional support and helping them to develop skills to make positive changes in their lives. Youth Workers plan and facilitate programs to address the particular issues young people face, including: building self-esteem and confidence, family conflict, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, sex and relationships, education, and finding a job.

The Candidate

The ideal Youth Worker will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in in Youth Work, Social Work, Psychology or related field
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, developing and delivering youth and community projects with an emphasis on adolescent group work
  • Demonstrated experience working with children and young people and their families, preferably in a child protection and/or Drug and Alcohol misuse context
  • Demonstrated experience in working with families with multiple, complex needs and that may be experiencing acute crisis
  • Experience in delivering Drug & Alcohol workshops for young people and parents/carers

Barnardos works closely with Aboriginal Partnership Agencies in the community, and would welcome application from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates.

Additional Information

To be considered for roles with Barnardos you will need to have (or be willing to have conducted) a National Police Clearance, current Working with Children check Clearance (or APP number) and for the ACT a Drivers History Check, Working with Vulnerable People Card and CYPS Check.

You will also need a full drivers license and a current full LR (Light Rigid) driving license, or have willingness to obtain during probationary period. You must also have the ability to work at least one evening per week (youth group or Outreach) and on occasion outside Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm when required to respond to a planned event

Salary

$61, 552 - $69, 744 pro rata (including FBT packaging) + benefits + Super.
