THE ROLE
The IMR program will play a significant role in delivering on the objectives and outcomes of improving multidisciplinary responses to support the needs of Aboriginal children, youth and their families in the ACT and contribute positively to the over-representation of First Nations children in Out of Home Care (OoHC).
As Senior Cultural Practitioner, Elder in Residence you will work to the CEO and alongside all Yerrabi teams to provide cultural advice and support the design and implementation of service delivery models that will reduce the multiple and complex needs of First Nation Families in the ACT. This will involve working collaboratively with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, Government and Non-Government Organisations to provide a Senior Aboriginal Elders’ lens for our teams and Families to:
- Improve local, culturally based and community-led responses,
- Enhance coordination, integration and effectiveness of service and system responses,
- Support the growth and development of the First Nations’ workforce, and
- Ensure the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principles, including our right of self-determination, are respectfully embedded in the service design.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Aboriginality
- Exceptionally sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, knowledge and culture, and proven ability to apply cultural knowledge to Yerrabi’s programs and best practices that support culturally appropriate responses.
- Tertiary qualification in Policy or related fields, or extensive / relevant experience, is highly advantageous.
- A sound knowledge and understanding of the 4 pillars of the CTG and the 5 elements of the Aboriginal Child Placement Principles (ACPPs).
- Provide cultural knowledge across all 5 elements of Yerrabi’s IMR framework for action, to ensure cultural integrity.
- Extensive experience in cultural mapping, genograms and family finding to assist with restoration and/or continuing cultural connections for Aboriginal Children with their Families and/or Kin.
- Assist in the development of guidelines to support the five elements of the ACPPs to help measure and ensure case work compliance with the ACPPs.
- Provide cultural knowledge across all elements of Yerrabi’s IMR framework for action, to ensure cultural integrity.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to multi-task with demonstrated experience in working as a valuable part of a team.
- Well-developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- The ability to develop strong relationships and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders including community, Government and Non-Government Organisations to deliver on complex policy areas.
- Familiarity with the use of technology including appropriate computer software to generate reports and fulfil the responsibilities of the role.
- Experience and interest in working in social justice policy issues related to Aboriginal children and their families.
- working with Vulnerable Persons card, police check and C-Class Driver's Licence, or capacity and willingness to get them.
