The Organisation
Rural Workforce Agency NT (RWA NT) are partnering with Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHSAC) to find an experienced Mental Health Nurse to join their committed team. SHSAC is a community controlled health organisation providing comprehensive primary health care services through nine remote health centres to some 4000 people living in the Katherine East region. Health centres are located at Barunga, Manyallaluk, Wugularr, Bulman, Mataranka, Jilkminggan, Minyerri, Ngukurr and Urapunga. The SHSAC approach involves community people owning and controlling their health services, with key values including mutual respect, openness, engagement, two-way learning and cultural safety.
The Role
The successful Mental Health Nurse provides expert support to clients requiring mental health care, their families and the remote based staff providing care. The Mental Health Nurse promotes excellence in clinical standards and quality of care and works closely with the broader Primary Health Care (PHC) team to integrate and coordinate care for best outcomes for the client. The role is a region wide clinical outreach position and requires travel by light plane or four-wheel drive and overnights stays to all Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHS) communities on a regular basis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide advanced Mental Health Care for people of all ages in the SHS region through direct contact with clients and families and providing advice to other members of the PHC and Population Health Team
- Demonstrate a high standard of professional practice and clinical leadership that incorporates best practice, education and research
- Contribute to and assist the multidisciplinary PHC and Population Health Team in the case management, coordination and decision making for clients requiring Mental Health Care
- Lead an integrated approach to the delivery of mental health service at SHS, actively promoting mental health awareness and primary prevention
- Facilitate better access to quality care for people with mental health related conditions.
- Implement and promote evidence based standards and policies which are compliant with relevant professional, industrial and legislative requirements
- Capture and share clinical information with relevant healthcare providers, including using patient clinical records and relevant data reporting
- Other duties as directed
Selection Criteria
Essential:
To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below essential criteria:

- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
- Strong experience in Mental Health
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in managing Mental Health conditions in a multi-disciplinary primary health care environment
- Proven understanding and adherence to the principles of Aboriginal community control of health services
- Ability to practice in a sensitive and culturally safe manner
- Advanced communication skills with well-developed cross-cultural interpersonal abilities
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of primary health care in remote locations
- Unrestricted Northern Territory Manual Driver's License
- Ability to travel in light aircraft or four-wheel drive with overnights, or additional nights stays to SHS's remote communities

The Location:
Katherine Region
The town of Katherine is the thriving main town within this sub-tropical region, situated a three-hour drive south of Darwin. The main town is situated on the banks of the Katherine River and has a population of around 10,000 people while the larger Katherine region has a population of just over 24,000. Katherine is well equipped as a regional town with a shopping centre that features a supermarket and many specialty shops. Katherine is on the edge of Kakadu National park which is filled with waterfalls and bush walks. Kayaking through the picturesque Katherine Gorge is a popular weekend activity.
