Worker Assist is seeking a part time Case Officer for a fixed term of 6 months, with the possibility of extension.

Worker Assist Inc. Tasmania provides an essential service to the Tasmania community as the only free legal service dealing with injured workers concerns when navigating the workers compensation and rehabilitation scheme and claimants under the Tasmanian Asbestos Compensation Scheme.

Established in October 2011, with the continued funding by WorkCover and support of the State Government Worker Assist is now an incorporated not for profit Community Legal Centre, providing specialist legal advice.

Overview of Position

The Case Officer will liaise directly with injured workers in a confidential and sensitive manner to assist them to understand their workers compensation claim and provide advice/case management.

The role will also include the implementation of community development strategies for the service, aid in the development of Worker Assist as a community legal centre and the provision of community legal education sessions.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Sound understanding of Tasmania’s workers compensation legislation and guidelines
  • Excellent communications skills with an ability to converse with workers across a range of industries but also various stakeholders including insurers, medical practitioners, employers, solicitors, barristers etc
  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with client issues
  • Good organisation skills to deliver services in an accurate and efficient manner
  • High level analytical skills with an ability to analyse complex situations and devise solutions
  • Operate as a member of a small team or individually

Desirable

  • Practical experience in dealing with workers compensation claims or legal experience would be highly regarded but not essential
  • Ability to interpret medical reports relating to workers compensation claims
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of relationships with key individuals and referral sources, including Unions, medical practitioners, solicitors and insurers
  • Develop and deliver community legal education programs to injured workers, HSR’s and Union affiliates
  • Ability to deliver a quality service and make a positive difference to injured workers experience in dealing with the workers compensation system
  • Proficiency in the use of technology
