The Wildlife Victoria Emergency Response Service provides the crucial point of contact for the community to report injured, sick, or orphaned native wildlife in need of rescue, care or treatment. The role of the Emergency Response Operator is vital to maintaining Wildlife Victoria’s 24/7, year-round service to assist Victorian native species and upholding our organisational mission and purpose.

Our Emergency Response Operators are at the forefront of our vital community service to support native wildlife. This position operates out of our headquarters at the Abbotsford Convent, Abbotsford.

We are looking for individuals who are available between the hours of 6:35 am to 9:00 pm, Monday to Sunday.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A passion for animal wildlife and a desire to make a difference.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Be able to use technology competently, and multi-task between different systems while actively listening to your customer.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle a high volume of calls and emails.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Be open to feedback and coaching.
  • Demonstrate patience and empathy towards people in difficult and potentially traumatic situations.
  • A willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and public holidays.
  • Full working rights in Australia as no sponsorship will be offered for this role.

About the Role

  • Answer and respond to inbound calls, emails, and other forms of communication related to animal welfare concerns in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Provide support and advice to callers on a variety of animal welfare topics.
  • Document all communication and interactions with callers in a clear and concise manner using our internal systems.
  • Facilitate active rescues and transports of sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife via coordination with volunteers.
  • Refer all non-native wildlife enquiries to the appropriate external organisations.
  • Liaise with shelter operators, foster carers, vet clinics, DEECA, RSPCA and other animal and wildlife welfare and zoological organisations.
  • Ensure all cases are followed up and “fates” (end result) are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Meet all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as advised.

Days & Commitment

  • An average of 5-7 shifts, with an average shift length of 7 hours between 6.35am-9pm Monday – Sunday on a rotating fortnightly roster.
  • The service is 24/7 and options to move into overnight roles may become available.

Essential and highly regarded attributes

  • Tertiary degree or certification in wildlife biology, environmental science, ecology, zoology, or related fields is highly regarded but not essential.
  • Knowledge about rescue, triage, rehabilitation and release of native Victorian wildlife or a willingness to learn on the job.
  • Customer service experience is essential. Previous experience in an emergency response setting or call centre environment will be looked upon favourably.
