We're looking for a volunteer Research Assistant who can contribute to our mission by providing valuable research support primarily to the CEO, COO, and Operations Manager. This role is essential for gathering, analysing, and presenting information that informs strategic decision-making and program development, ultimately contributing to the organisation's effectiveness and impact. This volunteer role has scope to progress to a paid casual or part-time role for the right candidate over time. We're looking for someone who dreams big and isn't afraid to ask dumb questions with a growth mindset.

Examples of how this role would function:

  • Our COO wants to stand up a new program design, and needs an environmental scan of similar programs in Australia and overseas written in PowerPoint to help decide on the best structure.
  • Our Operations Manager is creating the charity's People Strategy, and wants to understand what professional development opportunities other charities in Australia are offering their staff, and if there are any evidence based opportunities that might be right for us.
  • Our Digital Marketing Lead wants to see if they've missed any big marketing campaigns related to homelessness around the world, and what they involved.

Key Accountabilities

What is the role responsible for delivering in the organisation?

  • Research Support: Assist in researching relevant topics, trends, and best practices in alignment with the charity's focus areas (homelessness, direct cash transfers), providing timely and accurate information to inform strategies.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect, organise, and analyse data (qualitative and/or quantitative) from various sources, contributing to the generation of insights that guide the charity's initiatives.
  • Report Writing: Summarise research findings and insights in clear and concise written reports, helping to communicate complex information effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Presentation Preparation: Assist in preparing visual presentations and materials for meetings, presentations, and reports to convey research outcomes to leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Database Management: Maintain well-organised databases of research materials, ensuring easy access for future reference and analysis (we use Google Drive).
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with the CEO, COO, and Operations Manager to identify research needs and priorities, ensuring alignment with the organisation's goals.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated on relevant industry trends, research methodologies, and tools to enhance the quality and depth of research contributions.

Essential:

  • Strong Written Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to convey complex information concisely and clearly in written form.
  • Research Acumen: Proficient in gathering and synthesising information from various sources, using critical thinking skills to analyse and draw conclusions.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail when collecting, organising, and presenting research data.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and balance multiple projects.
  • Data Analysis: Basic proficiency in data analysis tools and software, such as Microsoft Excel or similar programs.
  • Collaborative Approach: Ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Initiative: Self-motivated and proactive in seeking out opportunities to contribute to the charity's research efforts.
  • Ethical Conduct: High level of integrity and ethical conduct when handling sensitive information and data.
  • Academic Background: A university student or recent graduate in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, public policy, research) with a strong academic record.
  • Growth mindset: Enthusiasm for personal growth within We Are Mobilise.

This volunteer role offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual with strong research and communication skills to make a meaningful impact on a small charity's work. The Volunteer Research Assistant will play a pivotal role in enhancing the charity's understanding of key issues and trends, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and contributing to the organisation's growth. The anticipated time commitment of approximately 0.5 days per week provides flexibility for university students or recent graduates to gain valuable experience while contributing to a worthy cause.
