The Wagyl Kaip and Southern Noongar people are the Traditional Owners of approximately 52,246km² and includes the towns of Buyups Brook, Gowangerup, Bridgetown, Walpole, Denmark, Mt Barker, Cranbrook, Tambellup, Katanning, Nyabing, Jerramungup, Ravensthorpe, Hopetoun, Bremer Bay and Albany.

Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar Aboriginal Corporation (WKSN AC) was formed as a result of the South West Native Title Settlement (Settlement). WKSN has been established to assist Wagyl Kaip & Southern

Noongar people to maintain, protect, promote and support their culture and manage the land and waters within their country. WKSN AC is party to one of six Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) that comprise the Settlement.After the Settlement, the Noongar Boodja Trust (NBT) was established to hold the Noongar Land Estate (NLE).

The purpose of the Trust is to provide significant opportunities for the Noongar community to help it achieve sustainable economic, social, and cultural outcomes.

The role

Work closely with the Lands Manager, the cultural advice committee and NBT to assess and on-board lands within the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar footprint. Further, the Lands Officer will undertake GIS mapping and land data management services and also provide community members with land related advice.

Key details of the position are:

  • Full time position on two-year fixed term contract.
  • Annual salary between $79,887 to $89,862 depending on skills and experience + superannuation.
  • Location – Perth (with a future potential to work from the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar region).

You will:

  • Implement and manage WKSN AC’s Land Management System (GIS and workflow data system) including onboarding WKSN AC leased land.
  • Maintain GIS data and produce maps and related products to facilitate decision making about potential land transfers, land use planning, Aboriginal cultural heritage matters and other land related projects.
  • Liaise with the WKSN AC Cultural Advice Committee and Board to assess and on-board NLE lands.
  • Liaise with the Noongar Boodja Trust regarding the leasing and on boarding of NLE lands.
  • Provide secretariat support for the Cultural Advice Committee including meeting organisation, agendas, and minutes.
  • Provide timely advice to the WKSN community and external stakeholders regarding land matters.
  • Liaise with Government departments, private companies, and not for profit organisations about land related matters.
  • Other duties as required.

Selection criteria:

  • Extensive experience in using GIS mapping systems/applications and Microsoft Office computer software (Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, TEAMS).
  • Experience working in a land related field such as town planning, land development, Aboriginal cultural heritage management or conservation and land management.
  • An understanding of Western Australian land tenure. 
  • Well-developed written and oral communications skills, including an ability to prepare reports, memos, and other documentation (including maps).5. Problem solving ability and initiative.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to, engage effectively with the WKSN Noongar community and to liaise with government and corporate stakeholders.
  • Current drivers licence.
  • Tertiary qualifications highly regarded, but not essential.
