The Westmead Institute for Medical Research are looking for a Communications and Marketing Coordinator to join the team. Reporting to the Communications and Marketing Manager, this role is responsible for supporting WIMR’s efforts in developing and implementing strategic communications to build brand profile, internal and external stakeholder connection and support, and revenue. The role provides practical hands-on support to build WIMR’s profile and drive awareness, encompassing individual research centres, researchers and research projects and outcomes. It also assists in opportunities to position the WIMR Foundation for long term success and growth.

As part of a small team, the Communications and Marketing Coordinator must be pro-active and prepared to manage, deliver and assist with all of the operational tasks and functions associated with internal and external communication. An ability to respond to requests swiftly, and with a client-focused mindset is critical.

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $75,000 to $80,000 base.

Responsibilities will include:

  • In conjunction with the Communications and Marketing Manager, assist in the development and implementation of a well-considered communications strategy and associated budget, encompassing immediate and longer-term marketing and PR initiatives. This includes both the internal and external communications strategies.
  • Assist in managing the brand profile, recognition and perceptions of the WIMR and WIMR Foundation brands.
  • Assist to ensure WIMR brand guidelines are met.
  • Assist the Communications and Marketing Manager to drive innovative communications initiatives to support philanthropy efforts including holistic campaign and event planning and implementation.
  • Take the lead on coordinating the website, intranet content and social media channels.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an effective social media strategy including a calendar for the posting of relevant content across major platforms.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of materials necessary to support WIMR brand building and philanthropy efforts. This includes elements such as the website, promotional materials and collateral.
  • Take the lead in implementing internal communications strategies including creating intranet content, designing and uploading information for internal screens and creating posters.
  • Work collaboratively with researchers and the philanthropy team to prepare compelling marketing materials.
  • Assist in executing the media engagement strategy including the development and distribution of media releases and managing media reach out and follow up.
  • Assist in the development of researcher and patient case study stories for use in media and marketing communications initiatives.
  • Attend WIMR events to gain information, conduct interviews and take photographs. This may, on occasion, include events out of business hours.
  • Coordinate relationships and practical requirements with external partners such as public relations consultants, graphic designer, print company, photographers/videographers and advertising agencies.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual reporting.

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following education, experience, and technical knowledge:

  • A positive, can-do attitude, and experience in engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability to translate scientific information into material suitable for a lay audience.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in developing and implementing marketing and communications strategies to deliver on objectives.
  • Experience in developing and implementing integrated PR/marketing campaigns, with an appreciation of both brand and ROI.
  • Experience planning, managing and reporting on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, in particular Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro.
  • Experience with using graphic design programs/software, e.g. Canva.
  • Experience in website management or familiarity with CMS.
  • Experience in using mass-mailing systems/integrated marketing systems, e.g. MailChimp, Salesforce.
  • Experience in producing and editing videos.
  • Experience photographing events and editorial-style images.
  • Media engagement experience with an ability to effectively craft key messaging and media releases.
  • The ability to strategically identify and leverage media opportunities.
  • Experience in managing agency relationships.
  • Experience in delivering results with minimal budget.
  • Understanding of contemporary communications techniques including experience in managing social media strategy and social media platforms.
  • Experience in strategic brand management.
  • Tertiary qualifications and/or relevant experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or communications.

Selection criteria

  • Proven experience and the competency to fulfil the key responsibilities and requirements of the role including involvement in the development of internal and external communications strategies.
  • At least five years’ demonstrated experience in an equivalent role.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write accurately and persuasively for different audiences.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects, campaigns and events on time and within budget.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain constructive working relationships with a broad cross section of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and role model positive workplace behaviours.
  • Tertiary qualifications in marketing or communications and/or equivalent relevant experience.
