An excellent opportunity is available for a Diversity and Inclusion Specialist to join the People, Safety and Culture department at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position

The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist will work closely with the Diversity and Inclusion Manager to support the delivery of a range of initiatives designed to promote equity, inclusion, safety, and respect. The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist will provide expert knowledge and skills to lead key projects that foster a fair and inclusive workplace and promote the application of a diversity and inclusion lens to WEHI's research activities.

Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of diversity and inclusion issues and ability to apply these in an organisational context.
  • Highly developed planning and organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise projects and work within timeframes to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to present high-quality information in a clear and succinct manner aimed at the target audience.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with a range of internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Influencing and negotiation skills and the ability to present a strong case to gain support for initiatives.
  • Conceptual and analytical skills and the ability to resolve issues to achieve agreed outcomes and identify and advise on issues and improvements.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of people from different minority groups i.e. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from a culturally and racially marginalised background, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, people with a disability.
  • Degree qualified or equivalent alternate combination of knowledge, training and/or experience.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of intersectionality and the complexities associated with applying the concept in an organisational context.
  • Lived experience of inequality.

Personal Qualities:

  • Demonstrable personal commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights.
  • Ensures they are aware of current issues faced by the broader community and seeks to apply this knowledge to understand and address challenges faced by WEHI staff and students.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work effectively with a range of people to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Motivated self-starter possessing initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Flexible, adaptive, and resilient.

Terms of appointment

This position is an ongoing role in a full time capacity (part time arrangements will be considered for the right candidate- please indicate in your cover letter your preferred FTE). Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 8 ($110,249 - $119,330). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
