THE ROLE

The Academic group is responsible for a broad policy portfolio including regulation and funding, teaching and learning; equity and access; Indigenous higher education; accreditation and the quality of the sector and of specific disciplines. The Academic group also plays a key role in supporting UA’s government relations and advocacy functions.

The Policy Analyst, Academic supports the activities of the Academic team and will in turn be provided support by the Academic team.

Reflecting the scope of the portfolio, the day-to-day work of the Policy Analyst, Academic is varied, and requires capacity to learn new material quickly and to deal with several issues and projects at the same time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the Policy Director, Academic, and in collaboration with other team members, the Policy Analyst, Academic will contribute to policy work across all activities within the Academic portfolio in line with UA positions and priorities.
  • Contribute to papers for the UA Plenary and Board and advice to the Executive.
  • Draft submissions and other papers as required.
  • Work with member-based working groups to support policy development and/or implementation as required.
  • Provide secretariat support for:
    • Lead Vice Chancellors (Quality and Regulation, and Academic),
    • Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Committee,
    • Standing Group on Quality and Regulation, and
    • Time-limited and ad hoc Working Groups as required.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive evidence base relevant to the Academic portfolio.
  • Assist other work teams as required.
  • Other duties as directed.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in assisting with the analysis, development and preparation of policy advice in an applied public policy environment.
  • Demonstrated capacity to write for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of people and organisations.
  • Ability to work in a small team, to organise work to meet deadlines, to work under pressure, to manage details effectively and to carry out a range of tasks quickly and with minimum supervision.
  • Understanding of the higher education sector and the research system in Australia
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent.
