Thirrili Ltd (Thirrili) delivers the Indigenous Suicide Postvention Service across Australia and has taken a national leadership role in the provision of suicide postvention support and assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities.

Thirrili employs a dedicated team of professionals to provide support across all states and territories in Australia. We are an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, with Indigenous Board and Executive & Leadership team.

Position Overview

The Policy and Research Officer position reports to the Policy and Governance Coordinator and undertakes a range of activities, specifically related to undertaking research related to culturally responsive and safe services for those affected or impacted by a loss to suicide, trauma informed care, and Aboriginal (and Torres Strait Islander) ways of knowing, being and doing. The research should focus on improving case practice. In addition, the Policy and Research Officer will develop draft submissions for Government and other inquiries (for example, Royal Commissions into Mental Health), but also prepare strategic discussion papers for the Board in collaboration with the Deputy and Chief Executive Officersand support advocacy for systemic change to address the contributing factors associated with the high rates of suicide amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant experience and/or qualifications in qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Excellent writing skills and experience in writing literature reviews and reports with a wide range of stakeholder groups in mind i.e. clients, service providers, government departments.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and experience in public speaking and making presentations to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Well-developed understanding of evidence-based literature of suicide prevention and postvention, trauma informed care, mental health, social and emotional wellbeing and building community resilience.
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Understanding of evaluation theory and experience in undertaking evaluations.
