Bicycle Mechanic and Shop Assistant

The ReCyclery

The ReCyclery

We are a community bike co-op and secondhand bike shop that offers a space for the Canberra community to repair their bikes, as well as find affordable components, accessories and newly-serviced secondhand bikes. We are located in Acton, adjacent to Civic and the Australian National University. Our premises include the bike workshop and is in the gardens of the Canberra Environment Centre, and will soon include a premises in the heart of the University of Canberra.

About the ReCyclery Bike Co-op and Position

The ReCyclery aims to provide an affordable and sustainable alternative to buying a new bike, as well as keep as many bikes as possible from landfill. We also aim to provide a safe space for the Canberra community to learn to confidently maintain and service their bike, to become independent of fossil fuel-based transport and to help others to do the same.

The ReCyclery is currently staffed by one paid mechanic/manager and over 30 volunteers, but we intend to employ two more mechanics by the end of the year. This is the first of those two positions.

We have a well-equipped workshop, with most tools required for bike repair. The workshop is a social place, where we share knowledge and skills. This means we try to make everyone welcome to use the space and the resources. When we can, we are here to provide advice and help with repairs.

As a bike shop, we offer bikes usually priced between $100 and $500. These are secondhand bikes donated to us by the Canberra community and businesses. These bikes come to us in various states of disrepair, and we do the necessary repairs before sale. We also take donations of parts, and so have a large stock of secondhand components and accessories. We also have a few wholesale accounts and offer some new parts and accessories.
