The Opportunity

A new opportunity has arisen at Telethon Kids Institute for a Research Assistant – Epidemiology Statistics to join the Malaria Atlas Project. The Malaria Atlas Project’s mission is to generate new and innovative methods to map malaria, to produce a comprehensive range of maps and estimates that will support effective planning of malaria control at national and international scales.

The Role

In this role, you will conduct high quality research assisting core MAP researchers in the preparation of model inputs, implementation of workflows, and dissemination of results. You will have experience in writing papers for peer reviewed publication plus presenting results and findings. This position includes nurturing constructive working relationships internally and externally with a variety of stakeholders including hospitals, universities and other medical research institutes is critical to the success of this project. Specifically, this role will provide support for our engagement with collaborators such as the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at The University of Washington.

This is a full-time role for 2 years, based at the Telethon Kids Institute in Perth, Western Australia.

Your Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a Masters degree in a relevant subject area (vector-borne infectious disease epidemiology, disease vectors, geographical information systems, geostatistics, or statistics)

Additionally, our ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

• Knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology
• Experience in analysing, interpreting and data manipulation using a variety of software platforms;
• Experience of geostatistical analysis (spatial and spatiotemporal), including working with raster data and geometry files;
• Excellent levels of numeracy as evidenced through your experience and/or education with the ability to use numerical analysis methods to develop algorithms and perform computations;
• Demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing, with proper use of the English language, grammar, and punctuation;
• Strong skills in decision-making, problem-solving, planning and organising;
• A high attention to detail and willingness to diligently self-scrutinise deliverables;
• Experience of ESRI’s ArcGIS/ArcMAP suite of software;
• Experience of Linux scripting/commands;
• Experience of the Python programming language in a geospatial context;
• Experience of R and R-studio and package development;
• Experience of Git or a similar source control; and
• An understanding of the issues arising from working on global publications, such as The WHO’s World Malaria Report or IHME’s Global Burden of Disease.

The salary range for this role is $60,361 - $81,784 AUD.
