Description
We are seeking an Experienced Kitchen Assistant to join our kitchen team at our Work Integration Social Enterprise cafe in Dickson.
The ideal candidate will work closely with the Head Chef to oversee kitchen operations, maintain food quality and sustainability standards, be willing to train and support women, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds enter the workforce.
Usual Hours
Tuesday to Saturday 7am - 3:30pm (negotiable)
Responsibilities
Kitchen Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Head of Food & to plan and execute the cafe's menu offerings, ensuring they align with our vegetarian and environmentally conscious principles.
- Assist in the creation of innovative and delicious dishes that showcase locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients.
- Lead kitchen staff by example, demonstrating culinary techniques and maintaining high food quality standards.
Kitchen Management:
- Oversee kitchen operations, including food preparation, cooking, and plating, to ensure efficient and timely service.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with the Head Chef to manage ingredient procurement and minimise waste.
- Maintain kitchen equipment and appliances, ensuring they are clean and in good working condition.
- Assist in analysing costs and sales to maximise efficiency.
Staff Training and Development:
- Train and mentor kitchen staff in culinary techniques, food safety, and hygiene practices.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages creativity and teamwork.
- Assist in staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and addressing any kitchen-related concerns.
Quality Assurance:
- Constantly ensure quality, that all dishes meet our standards for taste, presentation, value for money, and sustainability.
- Collaborate with the Head Chef to update and refine recipes and cooking techniques as needed.
- Implement portion control measures to manage food costs effectively.
Sustainability and Ingredient Sourcing:
- Support the organisation's commitment to environmentally conscious practices by sourcing sustainable and locally-sourced ingredients.
- Monitor and minimise food waste through efficient kitchen processes and inventory management.
- Stay informed about current food trends and sustainable practices in the food industry.
Requirements
- Experience cooking in a commercial setting, preferably in a cafe or restaurant with a focus on sustainable and vegetarian food.
- Knowledge of environmentally conscious and sustainable food practices.
- Ability to create innovative vegetarian breakfast and lunch dishes.
- Food Safety & Hygiene training or certificates (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with the team.
- Management, supervision and training of kitchen employees.
- Understanding of cultural differences and passion for our organisation's mission of supporting women from diverse backgrounds and promoting equal opportunity.
