About the Role

The MH&AOD Hub Team works with a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to provide timely intervention to consumers who present to the SVHM ED. Interventions will include mental health assessment, drug and alcohol assessment, psychosocial assessment, review of current treatment and investigations as determined by assessment, planning of care after discharge from ED and assertive community follow up if required.

The Team will work closely with the consultants to guide and lead the MDT in making high level clinical decisions that lead to quality outcomes for consumers.

  • In collaboration with the MH & AOD Hub Team & Emergency Dept. assess and highlight the risks and considerations around the client’s substance use and the impact, interactions and implications for management of the client presenting to the ED Hub service. This should be done with a particular consideration around the bi-directional nature of the MH & Substance use issues for the client (Dual Diagnosis focus).
  • Provide support and advice around the management of the physical and emotional well-being of the patient in relation to their substance use presentation – around the acute intoxication and withdrawal management issues as well as discharge planning and access to community AOD support
  • Provide support and advice around administer of medication in accordance with hospital procedures, protocols and policies and in line with evidenced based best practice substance use pharmacotherapy.

Classifications for this position will range from:

  • Registered Nurse ZJ4 ($113,646 per annum pro rata)
  • Occupational Therapist Grade 3 VG3 - VG6 ($100,089 - $114,358 per annum pro rata)
  • Social Worker Grade 3 SC31 - SC34 ($100,089 - $114,358 per annum pro rata)
  • Psychologist Grade 3 PL1 – PL4 ($104,078 - $119,095 per annum pro rata)

Your Contribution

  • Previous experience in an Emergency Department or relevant acute service delivery area (AOD and or MH)
  • Extensive experience in providing clinical drug and alcohol services and/or Mental Health services (minimum of 5 years post grad)
  • Bachelor Degree in either Occupational Therapy or Social Work, Clinical Masters in Psychology
  • AHPRA Registration (if applicable)
  • Social Work – Eligible for AASW registration. AASW Mental Health Accreditation is highly regarded. Overseas qualified Social Workers to provide evidence of AASW assessment of qualifications
  • Clinical Psychology – Practice Endorsement as a ‘Clinical’ Psychologist with AHPRA or engaged in an approved registrar program towards ‘Clinical’ endorsement.
  • Degree in nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Current Nursing Registration with AHPRA
  • Current Victorian driver’s license
  • Current National Criminal History Check, or willing to obtain

About the Emergency Department & Department of Addiction Medicine

The Hub team is dedicated to and based within the Emergency Department with the AOD clinicians within the Hub team reporting to the Manager of DoAM, with day-to-day reporting to the Hub Coordinator position. The Hub Coordinator will report operationally to the Nurse Unit Manager of the Emergency Department and clinical decision making of the Hub team will be undertaken in collaboration with the ED senior clinical leaders and DoAM & MH components of the Hub service. The AOD clinical roles within the Hub team will be supported by and have clinical governance provided by DoAM. The team will provide a seven day/week extended hours service.

The Department of Addiction Medicine at St. Vincent's (which includes Depaul House Alcohol and Drug Withdrawal unit) is one of Australia’s leading centers for the medical treatment of drug or alcohol addiction. The work includes direct patient treatment (both inpatients/Emergency Dept. and outpatients), research, education/training and policy development. Our multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, specialist counselors, and lived experience workers. Our treatment services encompass both acute withdrawal and long term management, using state-of-the-art methods and facilities. We have a strong culture of education, outreach to community and rural settings, training and teaching, from undergraduate students to senior clinicians across a wide range of professional disciplines.
