Saltwater People is an Indigenous-owned, full-service creative agency that delivers strategic design communications and cross-cultural engagement. We provide expertise in remote project delivery and inclusive communication solutions.

Working with government and non-government organisations, Saltwater People engage a team of professional creatives, project managers, strategists and storytellers to advance cross-cultural approaches that bridge shared understanding and impact with a view to sustainable, intergenerational change that will heal our country.

Saltwater People prioritise working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island creatives. We work collaboratively as a team on all projects, drawing on each team member's strengths and unique skill sets. The right person for this position has a well developed sense of social justice, is collaborative and committed to promoting Indigenous art and culture.

As a graphic designer with Saltwater People, you will work across print, digital, websites and UI/UX*. You will know your way around the Adobe Suite and ideally have 2+ years of experience as a graphic designer. We are looking for someone who will take ownership of all aspects of design and work closely with our team to ensure a smooth and timely rollout for all projects.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality graphic design that is visually impactful and contemporary, with consistent attention to detail
  • Work with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and creatives to develop their artwork into a brand identity
  • Create work that delivers creative solutions for our clients
  • Work on a variety of layout, branding, website, print and digital projects
  • Get across information in a creative but concise and professional way
  • Translate complex ideas into easily digestible infographics
  • Take ownership of the Saltwater People brand and produce collateral for our business and marketing
  • Create content that demonstrates cultural capability (this includes an understanding of issues faced by First Nations people) as well as content that is inspiring and empowering

Qualifications and experience

  • Qualifications in Graphic Design
  • Strong design and branding principles
  • Advanced in Adobe Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Adobe XD*
  • Strong typography skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt, prioritise and self-manage your flexible schedule to meet deadlines
  • A good communicator with an approachable nature
  • Passionate about all things design. You’re up-to-date with best-practice trends and are eager to learn more and share ideas
  • Natural people skills - which allow you to work within a team environment and directly with clients
  • Experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people in a manner that is respectful and demonstrates cultural capability

*Option to outsource web and UI/UX work if required.

Initially working with the Senior Graphic Designer until she starts maternity leave in March 2023. The position will require you to lead and deliver projects during these six months.
