About You

You are a proactive, outcomes-focused, and compassionate legal professional, who provides family law assistance in a way that meaningfully assists our clients and exceeds their expectations. You have a high attention to detail, strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with people quickly.

Key to your success is your:

  • Strong understanding of family law and intersecting jurisdictions 
  • Exceptional communication and organisational skills
  • Interest in and engagement with family law and family violence policy issues
  • Skill in working with family violence survivors, including trauma-informed practice

This is a full-time or part-time, fixed-term position, for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension (contingent on funding).

About this Opportunity

A fantastic opportunity exists for a Family Lawyer to join our small and dynamic team at St Kilda Legal. This is an excellent role if you are looking to develop your career, expand your opportunities and broaden your legal skills.

This new position aims to provide family law advice and representation to our clients who have family law issues arising out of family violence, in a holistic and connected-up way. The work will include parenting, divorce, and small property matters. The responsibilities of the role will include drafting of correspondence and court documents, court appearances, Legal Aid applications, and appearance at Family Dispute Resolution conferences.

In addition to legal practice, the role includes the opportunity to train community workers on family law, as well as to be involved in the preparation of family law reform submissions.

What do you need?

  • Current legal practising certificate.
  • A minimum of 2 years post admission experience with at least 1 year of experience practising in family law, in particular litigation.
  • Experience independently conducting family law casework, and having carriage of litigious matters, from commencement to conclusion.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal information simply.
