St Kilda Legal Service (St Kilda Legal) is seeking a motivated and passionate lawyer for a part time Family Lawyer position (0.6 EFT) on a 12 month fixed term contract (the position may be extended depending on funding).

The Family Lawyer will join the small St Kilda Legal team of five lawyers, two administrative staff and many volunteers. They will be primarily responsible for providing legal advice to family violence survivors with family law matters arising out of family violence, including parenting, divorce, and some limited property matters, in accordance with the Service casework guidelines. This may include limited litigation, depending on capacity.

The Family Lawyer will be expected to work closely with our Family Violence Lawyer where family law matters are referred from the family violence duty lawyer list at Moorabbin Justice Centre. This is with the aim of providing a more holistic, and connected, legal service to that client group. Finally, the work is likely to include an element of training of community workers and/or St Kilda Legal volunteers on family law, and working collaboratively with other St Kilda Legal staff on the drafting of law reform submissions.

The position will be based predominately at our office in St Kilda. From time to time the Family Lawyer may be required to attend other locations as the role requires including Moorabbin and Melbourne CBD.

Salary range: $70,000 - $74,000 per annum (pro rata) depending on experience plus superannuation. Generous salary packaging benefits is available.

St Kilda Legal Service (SKLS) provides free and accessible legal services to members of the community within the Cities of Port Phillip, Bayside, Stonnington and parts of Glen Eira. The Legal Service is committed to redressing inequalities within the legal system through casework, legal education, community development and law reform activities. 

We are a generalist community legal centre that provides legal advice and casework assistance on a broad range of legal issues, and often sees vulnerable clients with legal matters associated with poverty, drug addiction, mental illness and homelessness. SKLS provides a generalist night service three nights per week, and operates two specialist programs: the Drug Outreach Program and the Family Violence Duty Lawyer Program. We also undertake community legal education and law reform activities throughout our community.
