The SDA Newcastle and Northern Branch is on the lookout for a motivated and proactive Communications Trainee. This would suit either a junior person already working in our movement or someone who is currently studying a digital media, communications, or journalism-related degree or diploma. This is a part-time 22.8 hours per week position.

As a Communications Junior/Trainee, you will work across all aspects of communications, including content creation, campaign management, social media management & website development & maintenance.

You will also help to develop strong and innovative digital organising strategies and techniques to grow the union’s online presence and ultimately its membership.

The SDA Newcastle and Northern Branch comprises the NSW Central Coast, Newcastle, Hunter and Upper Hunter regions. As one of Australia’s largest private-sector trade Unions, we have more than 14,000 members in our Newcastle & Northern Branch, and over 210,000 members nationwide. We represent workers in the retail, fast food and warehouse industries. Approximately 35% of our membership is under 25 years of age. Approximately 5% of members in this Branch are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to assist in the development of creating engaging content for online audiences.
  • Assist in the management of multiple social media accounts across several platforms and plan, implement and analyse campaigns.
  • To be passionate and knowledgeable about the digital media environment including top-performing content for social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to produce captivating content and to edit and proofread content.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, timely manner with external third-party suppliers, potential member leads and existing member enquiries.
  • Organisational, cooperative and time management skills, including familiarity using online publishing and scheduling apps such as Google docs, Microsoft Suite, Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress, MessageMedia and Zoom
  • Eager to learn and grow within the Trade Union movement. A competitive salary package is offered to successful candidates.
