ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the PDP multi-discipline team leader, the Child & Family Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (CFHCNS) is responsible for ensuring the efficient, smooth running of the Developmental Paediatric Clinic at RFW. In addition, the CFHCNS will be encouraged to contribute to service development and innovation at RFW aligned with the NSW Ministry of Health’s First 2000 days Framework.

In addition to providing support to our Developmental Paediatricians, Paediatric Registrar, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Registrar and Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, this position will work collaboratively with the RFW Child & Adolescent Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Clinic Registered Nurse. The position is responsible for undertaking Child & Family Health Nursing assessments, paediatric nursing assessments, the management of stimulant medications, supporting clients and their families, supporting Medication Safety and contributing to Quality Improvement.

Royal Far West provides family centred care in a trauma informed model of practice, working with children and families from rural and remote area of NSW, including children in Out of Home Care and other vulnerable groups that do not have access to specialist paediatric services. This position will support RFW’s focus on the first 2000 days (from conception to school entry) promoting well-being and prevention and early detection of developmental, emotional and behavioural disorders in young children under 5. For example, the CFHCNS will make appropriate referrals to local Nurse-led health home visiting services for moderately vulnerable families with children < 2 years of age and provide consultation to and liaison with local service providers to support families with young children including facilitating access to local Child & Family Health Services.

ABOUT YOU

Essential Criteria

  • Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) within the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA)
  • Post graduate Qualification in Paediatric Nursing or Child and Family Health Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience working within a community health setting providing developmental paediatric, disability, Child & Family Health Nursing, and/or Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, including the use of psychopharmacology
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge, skill, and significant clinical experience in the provision of paediatric nursing and paediatric development, including working with children with intellectual disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, ODD and children with significant behavioural difficulties.
  • Experience working in a clinic environment, undertaking comprehensive child & Family Health/ paediatric nursing assessments supporting the smooth and efficient running of a specialist medical clinic.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation, advocacy, conflict resolution, and an ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and families from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trauma informed practice and working with vulnerable children.
  • High level computer skills and ability to use a range of electronic systems, including electronic health records.
  • Experience working with children and families in Out of Home Care
  • Demonstrated ability to independently problem solve, apply professional and ethical boundaries when working with complex situations, within both a multidisciplinary team and a family centred, strengths- based approach.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, lead, complete and evaluate quality improvement initiatives and/or research focused on patient/client outcomes.
  • Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills in an environment of competing clinical/administrative demands.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the National Safety and Quality Standards in Healthcare - in particular Medication Safety and Infection Prevention and Control.

Desirable Criteria

  • Comprehensive understanding of developmental vulnerability and the health challenges of families living in rural and remote Australia
  • Experience in clinical research, teaching or training
  • Experience facilitating groups or health promotion activities
  • Experience in clinical service delivery via telephone and/or telehealth
  • Knowledge and understanding of NDIS
