Bike Ed is a state-wide program and we are seeking to employ trainers to deliver the training in both Melbourne-metro and regional Victoria areas.

Outline of the program

The Bike Ed school program designed to be delivered by teachers within the school environment. The program is based around activities to keep the students engaged and provides specific teaching points to help educators communicate the skills required by students at each phase.

The four-unit practical program ranging from years 1-8 includes unit plans, lesson plans and teaching resources needed to make implementing bike riding education in schools as easy as possible.

Master Trainers are responsible for delivering the Bike Ed Instructor Training to teachers and support staff, ensuring that participants are accredited to deliver safe and effective Bike Ed.

The Bike Ed Instructor Training focusses on:

  • The Bike Ed lesson plans and curriculum
  • Effective teaching and learning practices
  • Setting up and delivering safe practical sessions
  • Differentiation of the activities to cater for all abilities
  • Risk assessment principles
  • Group riding skills

Prior to the one-day intensive training, participants must watch a series videos and complete the online quizzes with a pass mark of 100% (quizzes can be completed multiple times). There are six online modules:

  • Introduction
  • Bike crashes information and statistics
  • Identifying and responding to hazards
  • Managing group rides
  • Road rules
  • Teaching approaches

Individual requirements and key selection criteria

Master Trainers must have:  

  • Victorian Institute of Teaching registration or current Working with Children Check. 
  • Victorian Police check (current within 3 months)
  • Commit to attending 3 days of Bike Ed Master Trainer training in Melbourne – Monday 5 February – Wednesday 7 February 2024 (inclusive)

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Completion of a cycling instructor training course or skills training
  • Experience in delivering Bike Ed and/or cycling education programs
  • Cycling experience, (type of cycling experience, frequency of riding, and over what period)
  • Relevant teaching/training qualifications and experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the new Bike Ed program and associated materials
  • Understanding of the Victorian Curriculum and Bike Ed links
  • Ability to effectively facilitate and deliver the Bike Ed Instructor training program
  • Highly developed oral communication skills
  • Ability to effectively facilitate group discussions
  • Ability to manage groups of adult learners
  • Capacity to deliver training across the state
  • Ability to provide training with a diversity lens, including gender, accessibility and culture
