About us:

headspace Cairns (under the direction of the RFDS (Qld) Services Limited) is an innovative youth service, delivering: primary and mental health, alcohol and drug, social welfare and vocational services to young people aged 12-25 years. We’re looking for a passionate, dedicated and proactive person to join our team in this autonomous position.

  • Fixed-term, full-time until June 2020, with possible extension subject to funding
  • Cairns location with some travel required
  • Attendance at after-hours and weekend events is a regular part of the role

The Role:

The Community Engagement Officer seeks opportunities to reach out to young people and the communities that support them, to provide health education, raise mental health literacy and community awareness and link people to appropriate services. You will plan, develop, implement and evaluate a range of education and health promotion activities designed to raise mental health literacy and community awareness of challenges faced by young people, in order to increase early identification and help them to get early access to appropriate services. As Community Engagement Officer you will work closely with our clinical team to understand the services that headspace provides, to advocate our services to both young people and the wider community.

Dependent on years’ experience and qualifications, base salary on offer is up to to 61K plus super and salary packaging. We will also support you in your endeavour to develop new skills in a close-knit team which encourages the sharing of ideas and knowledge.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Ideally you will have a relevant qualification at tertiary level (minimum Diploma level) in areas of mental health, health promotion, education, community welfare, youth work etc
  • A minimum 12 months experience in a role working closely with young people
  • Demonstrated experience in the planning, development and delivery of high quality education, training, and community awareness programs and activities
  • Demonstrated high level culturally-appropriate interpersonal skills necessary to effectively engage young people, their families, other health professionals and the community, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and communities

You must be:

  • Passionate about our mission– providing excellence in aeromedical and primary health care across Queensland, and be proud to positively represent headspace and the RFDS
  • Dedicated, enthusiastic and proactive about reaching out to young people, promoting our services as appropriate and encouraging participation
  • Excellent in time management, planning and administration.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and will be subject to a criminal history check. It is a requirement to hold a Queensland ‘Working with Children Blue Card’.
