Relationships Australia works with children, adults, families and communities throughout the country. Our counselling, family dispute resolution and mediation services, family violence prevention and mental health services are funded by the Commonwealth Government with other family and community support services funded by state and territory governments and others. We are an Australian, community-based, not-for-profit organisation with no religious affiliations. Our services are for all members of the community regardless of religious belief, age, gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle choice, cultural background or economic circumstances.

The national office of the Federation is based in Kingston ACT and supports the work of Relationships Australia member organisations in each state and territory by facilitating collaboration, developing policy, engaging in advocacy with policy-makers, working with other peak bodies and providing secretariat and corporate support to the National Board.

The national office aims to represent and manage the brand professionally and in a way that progresses the interests of the entire Federation.

Purpose of the Role

The Communications Officer supports the National Communications and Engagement Manager in communicating key messages from the Relationships Australia Federation via numerous channels including its websites, social media platforms, mainstream media and the full range of publications such as the annual report and newsletter.

The Communications Officer will support the National Communications and Engagement Manager in the management of national media inquiries and media monitoring. In addition, the Communications Officer will assist in the development of content, design and messaging on behalf of the National Office and the Federation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support the implementation of national media strategies on relevant issues and initiatives in consultation with the National Communications and Engagement Manager.
  2. Respond to media inquiries, prepare briefing notes, liaise with and brief stakeholders as required.
  3. Monitor and report on national media coverage of Relationships Australia.
  4. Support events that promote Relationships Australia.
  5. Assist in the development and delivery of communication strategies that promote Relationships Australia and its activities and campaigns.
  6. In consultation with the National Communications and Engagement Manager and the National Executive Officer, assist in organising sponsorships by Relationships Australia of key conferences and exhibitions.
  7. In consultation with the National Communications and Engagement Manager and other federation members, ensure that publications and other visual media consistently reflect national branding guidelines.
  8. Initiate, edit and moderate content for social media networking sites hosted by Relationships Australia under guidance and direction from the National Communications and Engagement Manager.
  9. Assist in maintaining the national website’s content to ensure it reflects the values of Relationship Australia, and is relevant and up to date.
  10. Contribute to the production of national publications including the annual report and newsletter.
  11. Other duties as required by the National Communications and Engagement Manager and National Executive Officer.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  1. Qualifications in communications or a related field (completed or nearing completion).
  2. Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  3. .Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity to engage in team-based work.
  4. Ability to operate effectively in a complex, multi-organisational environment, such as a federation.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work in an online environment, through websites and a range of social media platforms.
  6. Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to manage complex projects, manage priorities and meet deadlines.
  7. Ability to use sound judgement in decision-making and problem solving.

Desired

  1. High level design skills including development of marketing and promotional material.
  2. Experience in media relations.
