Prison Network (PN) is looking for a dynamic and self-motivated person who is enthusiastic about working in a challenging and diverse setting, to join its team. Those applying are required to have the necessary skills to support and empower some of the most marginalised women in Victoria, working in the Victorian womens' prisons and providing post release support.

The Role

PN Support Workers provide support to female prisoners whilst in custody and post-release. This support includes:

  • Building rapport with women through regular in-prison visits and co-facilitation of in-prison programs.
  • Attendance and support with women in Court.
  • Working co-operatively and constructively with prison officers and staff.
  • Post release, linking women to their local community with formal and informal supports, to strengthen their resilience, independence and self-worth.
  • Post release, support women and their families, which may include:
    • Helping to organise accommodation and household goods
    • Provide general/crisis support as needed
    • Making relevant referrals appropriate for the individual.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills, display integrity, maintain confidentiality, have a non-judgemental attitude and be aware of social justice issues confronting women and their families.

  • Ability to work alone and in a team;
  • Flexibility, initiative and the ability to manage one’s own work schedule and self-care requirements.
  • Ability to address issues and problems quickly, creatively, and resourcefully and the ability to cope with stressful situations and crises.
  • Skills in relating to a range of people from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Experience liaising with formal welfare sector both in person and through written correspondence.

Experience and Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years employment experience as Social Worker/Community worker is required, together with a social work or community welfare qualification or similar. This position is part time, (at least 3 days per week) or full time, depending on the applicant.

Out of hours and some weekend work is required as well as being willing to travel to the country prison, Tarrengower on a monthly basis.
