About the role

The Museum has an exciting opportunity for an outstanding professional to lead the Programs and Learning business unit. They will also lead the design and delivery of high quality, creative and innovative education, and public programs for the Museum.

The Programs and Learning business unit delivers programs onsite at the Museum in Canberra, online (through web, digital and streaming services) and offsite through touring and outreach activities. The business unit focuses on building lifelong learning programs for all age groups, including early childhood, pre-school, school, and tertiary students as well as delivering a broad range of programs for adults.

The role involves working closely with the teams across the Museum to successfully engage local, national, and international audiences.

About you

The National Museum of Australia (the Museum) is seeking an exceptional and highly experienced leader for an ongoing position within the Public Engagement division. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of programming and educational specialists who deliver high-quality programs that seek to optimise learning and engagement.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in developing a strategic vision and implementation plan for the design and delivery of:
    a. high quality public programs for all audience age groups, to support collections and exhibitions, focusing on areas such as Australian history, environmental science, First Nations cultures and contemporary issues
    and/or
    b. education programs which include pedagogical theories and practices which align with the Australian Curriculum.
  2. Demonstrated experience in building high performing teams including leading, mentoring and managing multi-disciplinary project teams to deliver complex projects, programs and events.
  3. Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects, including the preparation of budgets and risk management reporting.
  4. Demonstrated record of achievement in establishing and managing productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders together with highly developed interpersonal, client service and negotiation skills.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Desirable

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in education, history, museums and or visual art/art history or relevant qualifications in a related field.
