Australian Red Cross is a Not-for-Profit organisation whose focus is on bringing people and communities together in times of need and building on community strengths. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was founded to bring assistance without discrimination to those wounded in war, and to alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Red Cross was founded in Australia in 1914, nine days after the outbreak of the First World War. About the role

Board Members are responsible for contributing to the appropriate strategic direction for the Society, with the objective of achieving the highest standards of governance and for supporting the Board to meets its responsibilities.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the financial viability, solvency, and sustainability of the Society.
  • Preserve and promote the reputation of the Society.
  • Ensure the effective management of risk.
  • Ensure an appropriate framework is in place to effect compliance with applicable legislation, regulation, policies, and procedure.

About you

You will be a recognised and respected leader in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community and committed to improving outcomes for vulnerable people. You will have experience in Governance and a strong understanding of board responsibilities.

Essential Requirements

  • Cultural competency covering an understanding of Indigenous people and their communities.
  • Strong understanding, and preferably, experience of the principles of good governance.
  • Passion for wanting to inspire, empower and lead people and communities to support vulnerable people.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Strategic foresight and focus.
  • Experience of business transformation and organisational change.
  • Critical thinking and constructive questioning skills.

Highly Desirable

  • Additional knowledge of policy matters relating to Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (desirable).
