Prahran Community Learning Centre (PCLC) is an established not-for-profit organisation and member of Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, located in the eclectic and energetic suburb of Prahran. PCLC offers a range of community activities, workshops, non-accredited Learn Local courses, as well as Occasional Child Care, disability services and aged care social support. The Centre has an open-door policy and welcomes people of all ages, abilities and walks of life.

PCLC is undergoing a period of transition and renewal. This is an opportunity for people who are passionate about meeting the needs of the local community to join our team.

We are looking for literacy and numeracy tutors for our pre-accredited Learn Local Conversational English course and our Literacy and Numeracy course. You will have the following:

Essential experience

  • demonstrated experience in teaching or training adults, especially students with low language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • experience teaching multi-level classes with people from diverse backgrounds and complex needs
  • demonstrated experience and knowledge of the Neighbourhood House sector

Familiarity with Learn Local objectives, structure and pathways is a definite advantage.

Ideally, you will have the following:

Knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes

  • develop classroom curriculum that is enriching and engaging for students
  • construct comprehensive lesson plans that meet the program plans/outcomes, individual students needs and community/employment needs
  • participate in meetings, both external and internal, as required
  • ensure all delivery methods are engaging for a diverse range of learning styles and reflect contemporary learning approaches
  • provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
  • be organised to ensure all work is documented and filed online is shared folders
  • work alongside volunteers or classroom aides to provide an optimum learning environment for students
  • maintain a safe and positive learning environment through positive reinforcement

Evaluate

  • maintain accurate and complete records of students' learning goals, needs, and their progress and development as the course is delivered
  • communicate necessary information regularly to other staff regarding student progress and student needs

This is a rewarding opportunity to create meaningful change for people who have not been able to complete their education, may have experienced barriers to learning, want to go on to further study or employment, or need general support in social settings.

The start date is the week commencing 3 October. The class duration for each is 2.5 hours. Classes run according to enrolments and are currently scheduled during the day on Mondays and Thursdays.
