Oakhill College is an Independent Catholic Secondary School conducted in the Lasallian tradition, with an enrolment of 2,000 students, boys Years 7 to 10, co-educational in Years 11 and 12. Oakhill College is located in Castle Hill, NSW, and offers a wide range of subject choices and extra-curricular activities.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for the following temporary part-time position commencing as soon as possible in Term 1, 2022.
We seek to appoint a Student Engagement Officer to recognise, assess and provide appropriate interventions to students and families who need support in their capacity to engage effectively in their education. The successful candidate will ideally have experience working in an educational context and have a genuine interest in being part of a school community.
The role is required to be performed predominantly during school term time only, for the equivalent of 3 days per week. Days and hours are open to negotiation.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate knowledge of, and experience in, the areas listed below:
Key duties and responsibilities
- Identify students at Oakhill College whose short or long-term wellbeing and safety is jeopardised and/or with specific concerns that affect their ability to learn;
- Accurately assess and support the needs of identified young people in the context of their families, school, and community;
- Deliver a culturally responsive, early intervention/prevention service for identified young people and their families;
- Co-ordinate and ensure access to appropriate services to improve, promote and protect the wellbeing and safety of young people;
- Deliver services which recognise and cater for the needs of individuals and/or groups e.g. ethnic groups, gender orientation etc;
- Be efficient in reaching those who need the service, and provide support for as long as needed;
- Monitor and review the effectiveness of interventions to ensure services are appropriately coordinated and focused to achieve goals;
- Be actively involved in designing and presenting programs to cohorts on age-appropriate topics and actively visible in cohort yards during breaks to develop connections with students;
- Work cooperatively as part of a partnership of services and service providers at the College and in the wider community.
The successful applicant will:
- Hold a tertiary qualification in a relevant field e.g. Community Services, Education, Youth Work or other relevant field;
- 12 months minimum experience working within a school setting with secondary age students and their families OR a youth support program is desirable;
- Be experienced in administering, scoring and interpreting cognitive behavioural and mental health assessments, and report writing (preferred);
- Possess a thorough understanding of the mandatory child protection reporting procedures and values that underpin a child safe organisation (preferred);
- Have demonstrated empathy for working with young people;
- Have demonstrated capacity to engage students, parents and teachers in support processes (preferred);
- Have demonstrated evidence based professionally informed judgment in dealing with sensitive issues (preferred);
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders within the agreed protocols and student care systems, but remain independent of the school’s student disciplinary process in order to maintain professional autonomy and ensure a relationship of trust is maintained with students and their families;
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and other health professionals;
- Adhere to professional and organisational ethical standards and treat all people with respect and dignity;
- Abide by the College’s privacy policy and observe the strictest confidentiality of all information;
- Demonstrate a clear understanding and commitment to the Mission of the Catholic School;
