About the Program

The Tackling Indigenous Smoking program aims to reduce smoking prevalence rates in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who reside in metropolitan Adelaide by providing an innovative population health program that encourages changes in smoking behaviours and attitudes. The program delivers services that undertake evidence-based tobacco control activities that are tailored to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal community in metropolitan Adelaide.

The team is responsible for implementing a multi-level population health approach that promotes lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of the onset of chronic diseases caused by tobacco. The program targets various target audiences inclusive of Aboriginal young people, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant mothers and families with young children as well as community organisations, groups and any other stakeholders that may engage or work with Aboriginal people.

This position will plan, coordinate, deliver and evaluate culturally appropriate workshops, community activities and events that deliver key messages and strategies that promote quitting, smoke-free environments and encourage attitudinal and behavioural change. Further it will ensure appropriate resources, health literacy and promotional materials are developed, sourced and implemented to promote the programs key messages and encourage behavioural changes.

About the Role

Under limited direction the primary role of the Project Officer, Tobacco is and not limited to:

  • Operate with a high level of independence in the overseeing of projects
  • Undertake a multilevel population health approach tacking smoking
  • Plan, implement and evaluate local health promotion activities e.g community events, workshops, smoke free policies, school presentations, smoke free environments that increase community awareness of the harms of smoking and benefits of quitting
  • Plan and implement group-based to help smokers in the quit journey
  • Ensure appropriate resources and promotional materials are developed and or sourced as required.
  • Provide support and facilitate access to health services, Quitline services and other treatment services available for people ready to quit smoking.
  • Deliver smoking cessation and support programs that raise awareness and promote practical ways to change behaviours associated with smoking
  • Identify, negotiate and maintain networks and partnerships with relevant organisations and community groups to encourage a coordinated approach to tackling smoking.
  • Identify, negotiate, and support external organisations and community groups to implement or review their smoke free policies and processes.

Remuneration

This position is under the Nunkuwarrin Yunti Enterprise Agreement classification of Corporate Services Level 5 (Salary sacrifice and paid Christmas and New Year break).

All positions within Nunkuwarrin Yunti of SA Inc will be required to undergo a six (6) months probationary period.

ESSENTIAL

Includes qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge:

  • A minimum of a diploma in public/population health, health promotion, addiction counselling or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordination and delivery of health promotion, population health activities, or community health intervention programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups, organisations, and communities
  • Demonstrated experience in project work or management, including planning and the ability to develop, implement and evaluate activities.
  • A high level of communication skills and a demonstrated willingness and ability to represent the organisation externally, including managing and developing essential stakeholder relationships and partnerships.
  • Ability to liaise, network and negotiate with a range of human service organisations and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a diverse range of tasks and competing priorities, working with minimal supervision and working as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising their own work to achieve specific objectives
  • Demonstrated experience in use of computer software appropriate to the role
  • A comprehensive understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family dynamics and kinship systems.

DESIRABLE

  • Demonstrated experience in delivering health related programs and services to Aboriginal people and communities
  • Sound knowledge of Health Promotion and Public heath principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based smoking cessation techniques and strategies.
