Senior Research Officer

The Senior Research Officer will undertake a range of research and analysis to inform options and recommendations for the design of a new independent Aboriginal-led accountability mechanism (the Mechanism) that holds government to account for its commitments under Closing the Gap.

This project fulfils commitments in the National Agreement and the NSW Implementation Plan under Priority Reform Three (PR3) – Transforming Government Organisations. The Government Accountability Team will conduct desktop research and extensive engagements with Aboriginal people and relevant stakeholders to generate options and recommendations for the design of the Mechanism.

The Research Officer will research and communicate a strong evidence base, and will play a key role in drafting final project recommendations. The Senior Research Officer will prepare quality reports, submissions, briefing papers and research papers to support project objectives. There will also be the opportunity to contribute to the wider project based on candidates’ interests, including participating in consultations and supporting the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) process for the project.

Essential requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in related field.
  • Demonstrated technical research and analysis skills, including in qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • High level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex concepts and put forward compelling arguments to diverse audiences through reports and other mediums.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural, social and economic needs of Aboriginal peoples.
  • A commitment to working in partnership and sharing power with people with lived experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing interests.
  • Integrity and commitment to Ethical Practice, Equity, Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety.

Desirable

  • Experience with Aboriginal knowledge systems and decolonising research practices.
  • Knowledge and experience of Closing the Gap.
