The Organisation

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is an international NGO promoting the global transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy. IEEFA examines issues related to energy markets, trends, and policies.

Combining high-level financial analysis and in-depth understanding of energy economics, IEEFA supports action strategies that address climate change and energy poverty, whilst highlighting how the current energy transition makes financial sense for everyone—financial institutions, governments, regulators, corporations, and ratepayers. Due to rapid growth within the Australian team, IEEFA has established a new Australian registered not-for-profit affiliate entity, IEEFA Australia.

The Role

Reporting to the US-based Executive Director and the Australian Board, The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides leadership, research program, communications and organisational oversight. The CEO is responsible for the strategic and business requirements of IEEFA Australia, including management of operations and resources, financial oversight, and staff management.

You will work with an excellent group of energy and finance experts to create and execute a dynamic research agenda that responds to day-to-day events and charts a course of long-term institutional change.

The CEO is also a spokesperson and representative for the organisation and develops and maintains partnerships with funding and partner organisations including financial supporters, investment and industry contacts, government, media, and other diverse external stakeholders.

You will also:

  • Provide overall governance of legal, reporting, and HR risk and compliance mechanisms.
  • Ensure funding and grant opportunities are identified and requirements are met on time.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement to strengthen organisational development.
  • Deliver energy finance expertise; advise on related industry, government, and investor trends.
  • Recruit, develop, support, and guide the high-performing Australian team of specialists.
  • Create a challenging and goal-oriented environment and build the team’s technical capacity.

Skills Required

You are a subject matter expert in financial and energy issues related to the fossil fuel and renewable energy industries and you understand how marginalised communities are affected by fossil fuels and climate change. Your technical and analytical expertise is complemented by your strong cross-functional leadership experience and the proven ability to build capacity in high-performing specialist teams including research, analysts, and communications staff.

You have demonstrated your commitment to addressing climate change through your senior-level leadership experience gained in a non-profit or similar organisation. You are a skilled networker, with exceptional interpersonal skills, and with stakeholder management experience across IEEFA’s partner groups.

Additionally, you bring:

  • Management and implementation of communications activities experience.
  • Expertise in campaign strategy development and implementation.
  • Successful representation of a similar organisation in public forums and media.
  • Demonstrated track record of financial oversight, risk management and operational excellence.
  • High levels of emotional intelligence with the ability to inspire and influence others.
  • Experience with grant proposals, administering grants, and contractual agreements.
  • Fluency in measuring and communicating the impact of grant-funded work to funders.
