Drug and Alcohol Worker (Identified)

Narang Bir-Rong Aboriginal Corporation
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Identified position

About us

Narang Bir-rong Aboriginal Corporation (NBAC) is an ever expanding organisation with a strong focus on making a change for the Aboriginal community.

We provide Aboriginal specific out-of-home care, family support and family preservation services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people and their families in Sydney, South West Sydney, Eastern Sydney, Northern Sydney, Western Sydney, Nepean Blue Mountains and connected areas.

Our workplace culture is second to none in the sector and based on our five core values. Those values are: connection, empowerment, consistency, belonging and confidentiality.

These are fundamental to everything we do.

Unlike most organisations, where core values are just a plaque on the wall, our core values play a big part in how we hire, train, and develop our employees.

JOB PURPOSE

As a Drug and Alcohol Worker in an Aboriginal child and family organisation, your primary job purpose is to provide culturally appropriate support and interventions to Aboriginal children, families, and communities who are impacted by substance abuse and addiction. Your role will involve working collaboratively with clients, staff, community members, other service providers and stakeholders to address the complex issues associated with drug and alcohol use.

Your first priority will be to build trusting relationships with Aboriginal children, families, and communities. By fostering strong connections and demonstrating cultural respect, you can gain a deep understanding of the unique challenges, strengths, and cultural contexts that influence substance abuse within the community. This will enable you to develop targeted and culturally sensitive interventions that promote healing, recovery, and overall well-being.

In your role, you will provide direct support to individuals and families affected by drug and alcohol issues. This could involve conducting assessments, facilitating therapeutic interventions, delivering harm reduction strategies, and developing tailored treatment plans. You will also provide education and prevention programs, empowering community members to make informed choices about substance use and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Collaboration and networking with other professionals and organisations will be essential. You will work closely with mental health professionals, social workers, community health organisations, and government agencies to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to supporting individuals and families. Your role may also involve advocacy for improved access to culturally appropriate drug and alcohol services and resources within the organisation and the broader community.

As a Drug and Alcohol Worker in an Aboriginal child and family organisation, you have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of children, families, and communities affected by substance abuse. Through culturally responsive and evidence-based interventions, you can help individuals and families on their journey towards recovery, healing, and resilience.
