The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Sustainability Officer to join our committed and passionate Sustainability Team. It is a great opportunity to develop, deliver and contribute to a range of environmental sustainability programs including climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience within the community.

The Senior Sustainability Officer will be responsible for projects and programs that contribute towards creating a sustainable city and Council’s commitment to achieving zero net community emissions by 2040, and a city that achieves climate resilience through supporting the community to adapt to a changing climate.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the coordination of Council’s Community Emissions Reduction Taskforce, including administrative tasks, providing advice and sourcing external expertise.
  • Investigate and assess community carbon emission reduction initiatives identified by the Taskforce (in line with the Community Emissions Reduction Analysis for Moonee Valley report), to determine feasibility prior to presenting to Council.
  • Prepare Council and Executive reports, briefings or workshops on the Taskforce recommendations and feasibility assessments and other general sustainability topics
  • Design, manage, deliver and coordinate projects and programs that the community can adopt, to reduce their carbon emissions, and build community resilience in response to the climate emergency.
  • Project management, from project initiation and scoping, through to budgeting, resource planning, engaging and managing consultants and contractors, stakeholder engagement, implementation and set up effective monitoring and evaluation systems.
  • Provide advice on climate change adaptation practices and contribute to a range of environmental sustainability projects and programs, including involvement in external stakeholder reference groups.

Skills & Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in climate change, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related field combined with relevant work and practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing environmental sustainability projects, climate change mitigation projects or other relevant discipline(s), to agreed timelines and budgets.
  • An understanding of, and preferably experience in, working in Local Government.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a changing workforce and environment.
  • Excellent PC skills, competent in the MS-Office suite of programs.
