Our Journey

The Secure Extended Care Unit (Unit 4) is a 50 bed Inpatient Unit based at Dandenong Hospital. SECUs provide medium to long-term inpatient treatment and rehabilitation for people who have unremitting and severe symptoms of mental illness or disorder with an associated significant disturbance in behaviour that preclude their living in a less restricted environment.

SECUs represent the highest level of care on the continuum of mental health services and provide extended clinical treatment, supervision and support for those whose needs cannot be met adequately by other available programs and services. Information regarding the Ward / Program / Department

We are presently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Grade 2 Occupational Therapist with a clear interest in mental health for a permanent on-going full-time role based at Dandenong Hospital.

A Day in the Life

Start your day by connecting with our fun, energetic team over a cup of tea or coffee. Afterwards you’ll see the patients on your caseload for individual assessment and interventions. This might involve going shopping, cooking together in the kitchen or working on budgeting skills to name just a few options. You’ll have the exciting opportunity to take the lead or co-facilitate sessions in our group program. We run a range of groups where you can contribute your ideas to planning interesting and engaging sessions. Some of the groups we are currently running include our breakfast group, bowling, art, gardening, Tai Chi and lots of different outings.

Beyond direct patient contact, you’ll play an important role in writing reports that will help to secure funding (e.g. from the NDIS), for our patients to ensure they have the supports they need post-discharge. You’ll also spend time meeting with external stakeholders to facilitate seamless transitions to post-discharge services. You’ll be encouraged to generate ideas for improving our service and given the support you need to see them come to fruition. Some of our recent projects include developing business cases for implementing sensory rooms and upgrading our courtyard and kitchen spaces to better facilitate engagement in meaningful activities.

Your professional growth is important to us, and you’ll have regular dedicated time for clinical supervision, opportunities to develop your leadership skills and to support more junior staff
