Our Journey – Subacute Movement Disorder Rehabilitation/ GEM

North West 1 (NW1) is a 32 Bed Subacute Rehabilitation Ward specialising in Movement disorders and Geriatric Evaluation & Management (GEM) care. Our patients are from the acute Hospitals or community for Rehabilitation and complex discharge planning. Our subspecialty is the care and management of our clients living with Parkinson’s disease. We are the leading ward in Victoria to manage and titrate Parkinson medications through oral to PEJ routes of Duodopa.

We work within a nursing team model of care - and in practicing within this model, we provide our patients and their families, a consistency in their care provision and clear communication across their journey. Our large and specialised Interdisciplinary team supports our patients in Rehabilitation arranging appropriate discharge locations when they are unable to return home.

Our ANM team is part of our senior leadership group who are pivotal in supporting the team and our patients in excellence in care and supports the unit manager in the delivery of safe & quality care.

We currently have 2 Associate Nurse Manager (ANM) positions available:

  • NW1 – Full Time Ongoing, 76 hours per fortnight
  • NW1 – Part Time fixed term unit April 2024, 64 hours per fortnight

A day in the life

In these leadership roles, you will work closely with the Nurse Manager's to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the ward. No two days will be the same as you work within an established, friendly and supportive team environment, working closely together to care for patients along with providing opportunities for staff development and growth in areas that staff are passionate about.

What you bring

  • With broad experience as a Registered Nurse, you understand the importance of patient centred care.
  • You have a genuine interest in working and interacting with our diverse patient group, supporting them with daily functions.  At times, this patient cohort can demonstrate challenging behaviours.
  • Your strong clinical skills will be regularly demonstrated as you undertake complex discharge planning, complex wounds and address continence and catheter issues to see that all patients are treated with dignity and respect whilst in our care.
  • You bring genuine passion and interest to this unique environment.
  • With excellent communication and negotiation skills, you have the resilience to manage your responsibilities across a variable unit as part of a devoted team.
  • While you have had some exposure to Subacute Services, experience in a dedicated GEM/Rehabilitation unit is not mandatory.
  • At the heart of your practice is the patient and providing patient centred care always.
  • You have a 'Lead by example' attitude, are proactive and have exceptional time management and critical analysis skills.

You will also demonstrate:

  • Experience working as an Associate Nurse Manager or in charge, essential
  • Inspire individuals and groups to achieve personal, organisational and service professional goals
  • Promote a unit culture of optimism, innovation, encouragement, learning and creativity
  • Demonstrate a commitment to organisational driven change
  • Participate in developing others including orientation, preceptorship, mentoring and succession planning
  • Clearly communicate clinical and behavioural expectations to staff
  • Work collaboratively to support the Nurse Manager to provide effective, visible leadership and supervision across the team.
