Mind Australia is a service provider for Mental Health Services in Mackay providing different service types in the Mackay Hospital Health Services area for clients dealing with day-to-day impacts of mental illness.

Mind lead, coordinate and manage The Centre of Excellence in Peer Support.

The Centre of Excellence in Peer Support (CEPS) provides a centralised specialist clearing house and online resource centre for mental health peer support. It has been set up in response to the growing interest in, and recognition of, peer support work. The CEPS website provides access to a wide range of research and resources for consumers, families and other carers, mental health service staff and provider organisations. The CEPS project officer is also available to provide individualised support for this role

About the role

Mind is seeking 3 part time peer support practitioner to join our GBRSP team (1 x 26.6 hours/week role and 2 x 19 hours/week role). Peer support is an important part of Mind’s approach to recovery. The peer support practitioner works as part of a multidisciplinary team, with personal lived experience of mental ill health and recovery enabling application of their experience to support others through the role. The program delivers short and long term activities - for up to 12 months - to meet clients identified needs. The role includes:

  • Disclosing your lived experience in an appropriate professionally purposeful manner to support, empower the recovery of clients
  • Work with clients to develop a learning plan to build skills and achieve goals through attendance at co-designed, education based peer developed groups, support and sustain them return to their own home, in a community of their choice to live a meaningful life, through supporting their personal recovery journey
  • Facilitating, coordinating, co-designing evidence based groups that meet the needs of clients and support families and carers
  • Planning, developing and facilitating group work programs that will assist clients to build their skills, focus on their recovery and work towards transitioning back or remaining in their natural community
  • Making linkages and build relationships including referral pathways that support connectedness for clients in the program and the community.

Skills & experience

  • Lived experience of mental ill health and recovery AND the ability and willingness to use and draw from your experience to support, inform and influence the work of the team.
  • Tertiary qualifications or a minimum certificate IV in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health related field as designated by Mind
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Computer literacy to access & manage different systems and software.
