ABOUT MELANOMA PATIENTS AUSTRALIA

Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA) is an independent, national charity that offers a network of support and information to people affected by melanoma. We are the largest melanoma cancer patient advocacy group in Australia with a vision that no-one with melanoma walks alone.

THE ROLE

MPA is seeking a talented Telehealth Nurse with a minimum of 4 years in an RN role with oncology experience to provide a telephone-based service for patients, their families and carers at any stage of their melanoma cancer journey. The Telehealth Nurse aims to empower patients, their families and carers to make informed choices about the treatment and management of their melanoma cancer. They will also address the supportive care needs, provide tailored informational support, and link people into MPA’s wider range of support programs for further emotional and practical help.

The Telehealth Nurse will also be involved in Support Group facilitator activities and the development and production of information and support resources for MPA and our clients.

As part of a Team, the Telehealth Nurse will provide support, guidance and education as needed to staff and volunteers providing the range of MPA services.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Registered Nurse
  • Registration with AHPRA
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in IT systems including Microsoft Office
  • Clear Police Check or ability to obtain one
  • 4 years minimum experience in a clinical setting with experience in oncology disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience of working with people with a life-threatening illness (including melanoma)
  • Experience working online and by telephone (desirable)
  • Experience in managing projects (desirable)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Please note: The nurse in this role must not give medical treatment advice, formally or informally, and does not involve clinical counselling.

Using a case management model, the Telehealth nurse can discuss anything to do with cancer by telephone or online video including:

  • Help clarify information given to patients by treating doctor on the diagnosis
  • Help to clarify medical terms
  • Provide information about treatments and their side effects e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pain medication
  • Provide information about procedures and their side effects e.g. surgery
  • Equip patients and families with questions they can ask their medical care team
  • Provide resources – brochures, help sheets, videos
  • Encourage patients to proactively manage their melanoma
  • Assist patients and families to navigate the healthcare and community services system and access relevant services
  • Provide continuity of patient care and ongoing support throughout treatment and beyond including hospital admission, discharge, accident and/or emergency hospital visits
  • Participate in data collection, health outcomes reporting and program evaluation and continuous improvement
