Margaret Tucker Hostel is an Aboriginal community organisation providing supported crisis accommodation to young Aboriginal women who are aged 15-18 years of age who are experiencing homeless or at risk of being homeless.

The hostel provides a culturally supportive and safe environment to young Aboriginal women and their children at a time when they are very vulnerable and in need of a safe place to stay.

We are looking for someone to work in the Support Worker role within our organisation.

The Support Worker role works a rotating roster that includes sleepover shifts in the evening on weekdays, weekends and public holidays. The role also includes some administrative work including recording shifts in a communications book and maintaining file notes.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and an understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal communities today
  • A commitment to respecting Aboriginal culture, values and ways of doing business
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and use initiative within the role
  • A knowledge of other Aboriginal agencies/organisations locally who can provide support services that are associated with homelessness, drug/alcohol and mental health related issues
  • An ability to engage and work with young women with a range of identified needs related to homelessness, trauma and behavioural issues
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and understanding when it comes to working with young women and children and the issues they are confronted with
  • Demonstrated communication and active listening skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs and demonstrated ability to use computer/email systems efficiently and effectively
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy

Requirements

  • A current Working with Children Check is a mandatory requirement for this position
  • Willingness to undertake a national police record check
  • A current and valid drivers licence
  • First Aid certificate (or willing to undertake training)
