  • Location: Based at our electorate office, 1/49 Station Rd Indooroopilly
  • Status: Part time (3 days per week). Contract until Friday 6 November 2020 incl. 3 months’ probation.

About the job

The position assists Michael and our team in helping our constituents in Maiwar to solve problems and help them achieve political change. The position involves reception duties and dealing with constituents and the general public. We have a small team including four other staff members (all part time) plus Michael himself. 

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Assist in the provision of confidential administrative and clerical support services to Michael and Electorate Officer, using a variety of electronic and other IT office equipment. 
  2. Assist with general enquires from constituents concerning a wide range of community, social and political issues. 
  3. Assist the Electorate Officer in ensuring that Michael is informed of developments within the Electorate. 
  4. Undertake some social media responsibilities. 
  5. If required, assist Michael with management of the Members accounts and Acquittal System records. 
  6. Other duties as may be directed by the Electorate Officer or Michael.

Selection Criteria 

Experience

Previous experience in the office of a State or Federal Member of Parliament or Councillor of a Local Government would be advantageous. Experience in social services, legal assistance, customer service would be advantageous.

Importantly, experience working for social and political change in any setting, including community-based and unpaid roles would also be advantageous.

Not required but possibly useful: video, graphic design or other creative experience.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Advanced communication skills, both written and oral are considered essential.
  2. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and liaise with a diverse client group including constituents, community groups, Members of Parliament and Public Servants.
  3. Ability to prioritise activities to meet deadlines.
  4. Ability to perform allocated duties thoroughly and with limited supervision.
  5. Good general knowledge, with a particular emphasis on Queensland political and current affairs.
  6. Interest in or knowledge of issues relevant to the Maiwar electorate (Auchenflower, Bardon, Taringa, Toowong, St Lucia, Indooroopilly, Fig Tree Pocket) would be useful.
  7. Proven word processing skills, general computing skills (e.g. email and Outlook, internet, spread sheets, Google documents, NationBuilder or other databases etc.) and digital housekeeping skills (e.g. computer file structures, data archiving and deletion) at an intermediate level are considered essential.

Length of employment

The position runs until 30 November 2020 (after the next State Election on 31 October 2020). After that date we will be reviewing the structure of the office. Electorate Office staff are employed whilst the Member is in office.  Should the member retire or be defeated at an election then the Electorate Office staff’s employment will cease.

Conditions of employment

Employment conditions for Electorate Office staff are determined by the Queensland Parliamentary Service Award - State - 2015 and the State Government Entities Certified Agreement 2015.
