This Role:

At any one time, around 2,500 international personnel contribute to a global team of over 30,000 Médecins Sans Frontières field staff who provide emergency medical care in around 70 countries each year. Australian and New Zealander professionals fill more than 200 field positions annually. As a cultural mediator you will provide a vital link between our beneficiaries and Médecins Sans Frontières teams by fostering the removal of cultural and linguistic barriers.

Your skills in translation and cross cultural communication will be the key to your success in this role. You will work alongside our medical teams to ensure that those most at risk receive medical care in a language that is understood by them and in a manner that is culturally sensitive. You may be involved in health promotion activities as well as clinical and mental health consultations that require a compassionate and considerate personality to build relationships of trust in a supportive environment.

Ideally you will:

  • Have experience as a translator, cultural mediator or health promotor
  • Year 12 High school certificate (or equivalent)
  • Have an English language level of 5.55 or higher under IELTS or B2 under CEFR
  • Have Fluency (C1 or native speaker) in at least one of the following languages: Farsi / Dari and or Arabic (Note: we have HIGH needs for Farsi speakers) (Other languages may be an asset)
  • Have experience working in health, social work, mental health or resettlement support roles for migrant, refugee and asylum seeker communities (is an asset)
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand permanent resident/citizen
  • Be available and able to travel and work overseas for 3+ months
