The Organisation and the Role

Kippax Uniting Church is a fellowship of reconciliation, living God’s love and acting for the common good to build a just and compassionate community.

Kippax is both a modern, vibrant Uniting Church and one of the significant community service agencies in the ACT.

As a community service agency (UnitingCare Kippax), we run a variety of programs, funded from a number of sources, to assist the people of the ACT who struggle with issues of low income, housing stress, relationship problems, and social disadvantage.

The Volunteer Coordinator works under general direction from the Church Minster to deliver high quality volunteer and student coordination and administration for both Kippax Uniting Church and UnitingCare Kippax.

The Volunteer and Student Coordinator is responsible for assessing, informing and coordinating the volunteer and student requirements of the organisation. This includes; selection, induction, training, rewarding and recognising volunteer and student contribution.

Service Delivery

To work effectively, the Volunteer and Student Coordinator engages in positive and professional relationships:

  • Ensuring all volunteers and students have a clearly defined role and role description upon commencement and a clear understanding of their role.
  • Engage supportively with volunteers and students to ensure positive experience.
  • Coordinate and source volunteers and students through various networks and advertising avenues.
  • Conduct volunteer and student inductions and orientations.
  • Monitor the performance of volunteers and students to ensure duties are performed in a safe and professional manner.
  • Development of volunteer and student rostering.
  • Identify and coordinate volunteer and student education and training opportunities including a strong understanding of the Kippax Uniting Church and the Uniting Church of Australia.
  • Coordinate teams of volunteers for large-scale actions.
  • Develop and implement volunteer rewards and recognition events.
  • Represent the organisation in both internal and external forums and expos related to volunteers and student engagement.

Administration

The Volunteer Coordinator will also perform administration duties to:

  • Ensure volunteer’s personnel files contain all required, current and valid information including police checks, Working with Children Checks and any other necessary requirements specific to the volunteer’s role.
  • Ensure that volunteers are compliant with the National Standards for Volunteer

Involvement and Uniting Church volunteer requirements.

  • Ensure accurate data, information and statistics are collected and maintained, including maintaining the volunteer and student database (including hardcopy files) in collaboration with the congregation’s Volunteer Contact Officer.
  • Set up and maintain the volunteer newsletter

Teamwork

As part of the Team, the Volunteer and Student Coordinator will:

  • Organise regular volunteer and student meetings and debriefs and provide positive support and advice were required
  • Ensure that volunteers and students operate under the values, policies, and procedures of the organisation
  • Develop sound relationships and effective communication with internal and external colleagues.

  • Maturity: resilient and positive outlook, with a clear set of values that include justice, honesty and integrity.
  • Communication: high level communication, negotiation, networking and relationship-building skills.
  • Collaboration: work collaboratively and have an understanding of ethical boundaries.
  • Sound time management, planning, and organisational skills to meet the demands of the busy position
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated networking and relationship management skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work both autonomously with limited support and as a team member

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant experience or qualifications in volunteer management, administration and or community services.
  • Understanding of and a commitment to work within the ethos of the Uniting Church in Australia.
  • Highly developed capacity to work both in a team and independently.
  • Working with Vulnerable Persons card and police check or capacity and willingness to get them at your own expense.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of the ACT community sector.
  • Clear understanding of Workplace Health and Safety guidelines and how to apply them in practice.
  • Certificate IV Training and Assessment
