About Jawun

Jawun is a not‐for‐profit organisation that leverages the capabilities of corporate, government & philanthropic Australia to support programs of change in Indigenous communities. Guided by the strategies of Indigenous leaders, Jawun seeks to foster long term partnerships that build sustainable capacity in Indigenous organisations and communities.

Over 21 years, Jawun has evolved from facilitating secondments and Executive Visits in Cape York to brokering support for regional and national policy reform. Our future will see the consolidation, evolution and innovation of the partnership model and our positive influence on Indigenous empowerment and the reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Jawun has facilitated more than 3,600 corporate and government employees from the banking, management consulting, resources, insurance, academic, service and public sectors to live and work in Indigenous communities across the country, transferring skills and knowledge to accelerate community initiatives and enterprises.

Jawun also initiates leadership development through its Emerging Leaders’ Program for Indigenous changemakers, a reverse secondment program for Indigenous leaders in corporates and the Stories of Female Leadership, a network of over 200 women.

The Jawun model is transferable and today we work with remote communities in Cape York Peninsula (QLD), Pilbara, East and West Kimberley (WA), Central Australia and North East Arnhem Land (NT), regional communities of Goulburn-Murray (VIC), Central Coast (NSW) Lower River Murray (SA) and Far West Coast (SA), the urban communities of Inner Sydney (NSW) and South West Australia (WA).

Jawun draws upon the best and brightest secondee resources from over 30 corporate and government partners in pursuit of Indigenous led change.

Role Objective

As General Manager – Collaborative Futures (GM- CF), you will be responsible for driving Jawun’s initiatives that focus on public-spirited, community-minded leadership that use innovative Indigenous approaches to create long-term change.

Directing Jawun’s Indigenous leadership strategy to strengthen a sustainable pipeline of Indigenous changemakers across the Jawun regional network. Your direct input and influence is required to enhance the currency of the leadership strategy and program suite including through a focus on building powerful encounters between corporate, government and Indigenous Australia. This includes supporting Stories of Female Leadership, a network of over 200 women.

Strong Indigenous leadership is necessary for Indigenous communities to be organised, to represent themselves and to be empowered to do things that are important for their prosperity.

You will also be responsible for extending Jawun’s reach through a more dynamic footprint by scoping and supporting new Jawun regions that will be supported by a mix of virtual engagements and in-place leadership offerings.

You will have exceptional relationship management skills as you collaborate with senior management to create outcomes and lead national projects. This requires you to influence and collaborate with key stakeholders whilst leading and delivering programsy and project team members to ensure smooth and timely delivery of outcomes for our partners.

Role & Responsibilities

The primary objectives of the role are to:

  • Be accountable for the effective operational management of designated Jawun regions and provide guidance to the relevant Regional Directors (including mentoring where required);
  • Participate in the development of Jawun’s long-term strategy and evaluation frameworks;
  • Optimise Jawun’s reach through a more dynamic footprint by scoping new regions;
  • Support the transition of mature organisations to a lighter touch model;
  • Management, implementation and revision of Jawun’s Indigenous Leadership Strategy, including support to our Stories of Female Leadership network;
  • Facilitate cross‐learnings across regions; A minimum of 5 regions will be part of this accountability over time;
  • Be a member of Jawun’s strategic interface (supporting CEO) with corporate and government relationships;
  • Be accountable for high quality performance measurement and reporting, including overseeing of Regional Director and Changemaking Director reporting; and
  • Actively influencing a culture of partnership and understanding internally and externally.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary education is desirable, but not essential
  • Experience in Indigenous affairs is desirable but not essential
  • Experience in building public-spirited, community-minded leadership is essential
  • Skilled in being empathetic, diplomatic, persuasive and a good listener
  • Organised, outcome focused and collaborative in approach to work
  • Operational experience in managing projects, event logistics and budgets;
  • Motivated by results, innovation and continuous improvement;
  • Insightful – ability to read situations and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to engage a diversity of people (from secondees to Indigenous leaders, corporate and government to senior executives) and manage a wide diversity of personal styles.

Compensation

Salary package between $150k to $170k including superannuation and additional tax benefits such as laptop, internet and up to $15,900 salary sacrifice, equivalent to $9,338 in additional salary income is on offer dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
