Jacqui Lambie Network Senator for Tasmania Tammy Tyrrell seeks an experienced policy adviser to join her team. This role is suitable for a policy analyst with a background in law who has experience of Australia’s parliamentary system.
This is a permanent part-time position based in either Launceston, Tasmania or Parliament House, Canberra, depending on the preference of the successful applicant. The position will be up to three days a week.
Key Position Responsibilities:
- Offer written and verbal briefings to Senator Tyrrell and her staff on legislation before the Senate
- Assist Senator Tyrrell in the design, development and stakeholder consultation relating to amendments, bills and committees
- Prepare speeches in collaboration with Senator Tyrrell that are consistent with the legislative position of the Jacqui Lambie Network
- Proactively identify opportunities for strategic interventions in the ordinary business of the Senate to advance the legislative priorities of the Jacqui Lambie Network
- Assist with monitoring the activities of parliament during sitting days, and providing procedural advice to Senator Tyrrell on the chamber floor
- Liaise with stakeholders and other staff from Senators Lambie and Tyrrell to prepare supporting material in advance of Senate Estimates and committee inquiries
Key Selection Criteria:
To meet the key responsibilities, you’ll need to be able to demonstrate:
- A strong background in law or legal studies
- A minimum of twelve months experience providing policy briefings in a professional capacity
- An understanding of Australian federal government policies, processes and legislative frameworks
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A record of ability to manage competing deadlines
In addition, we’ll be particularly impressed if you have:
- A working knowledge of the practice and procedure of the Australian Senate
- Experience offering advice on legislation in a political office
- The ability to travel domestically to attend Senate inquiry hearings, and parliamentary sittings (if Launceston based) or the Electoral Office (if Canberra based)
- A history of proactively identifying opportunities for creative media interventions
The position is offered as an Assistant Adviser classification, with a pro-rata salary range between $82,319-$98,739 + 15.4% superannuation contributions, and an additional pro-rata $30,779 personal staff allowance. This position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-2023.
