Who are we?
Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (BNTAC) is the prescribed body corporate holding native title on trust for the Banjima People.
The Banjima native title determination area covers a large area of land and waters in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. There are approximately 500 adult Banjima People and many more Banjima children.
BNTAC is a charitable organisation with objectives that include to:
- Provide direct relief from poverty, sickness, suffering, misfortune, disability, destitution, helplessness and disadvantage among Aboriginal people, especially the Banjima People;
- Maintain, protect, promote and support the traditions, laws, languages, culture, native title traditions and customs, development, interests and social progress of Aboriginal people, especially the Banjima People;
- Provide environmental, social, economic and cultural benefits to Aboriginal people, especially the Banjima People;
- Support and provide education, training and employment for Aboriginal people, especially the Banjima People;
- Support and provide housing for the Banjima People; and
- Hold title to any vested land;
BNTAC also acts as the ‘Local Aboriginal Corporation’ under two large indigenous land use agreements between mining companies and the Banjima People.
The opportunity
As a brand-new role, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chief Executive Officer to join our developing corporation. It is anticipated that there will be 3 teams to lead across Perth, Karratha and Tom Price, the role will be based in Perth and require regular regional travel.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a unique group of engaged and passionate individuals to deliver a range of programs and services. Strong relationship development and operational management skills are paramount, as well as stakeholder management and highly developed networking capabilities.
The role
The CEO will report directly to the Board of Directors, but will also be accountable to the wider Banjima community. BNTAC has recently undertaken extensive strategic planning and the role of the CEO will be to implement and execute the existing Banjima strategic priorities. This will include the establishment and overall management of:
- A Banjima Country Management Unit - a ranger unit based in Tom Price that will consist of 9 FTE employees; and
- An ‘Executive Office’ function to service the Banjima Benefits Management Structure which consists of a Direct Benefit Trust and a Charitable Trust which are administered by an independent professional trustee company.
Responsibilities include:
- Attracting, developing and retaining a strong and engaged team to deliver on operational excellence;
- Establishing operations to drive efficiency across administration and general operations;
- Understanding the responsibilities of BNTAC as the prescribed body corporate and Local Aboriginal Corporation under various mining agreements;
- Ensuring strong governance across the organisation while managing sensitive politics;
- Commitment to the role of the CEO in advising and servicing the Banjima community, the Board of Directors and also the Banjima Benefits Management Structure;
- A deep commitment to building capacity of the Banjima People;
- Striving for financial sustainability into the future;
- Building and fostering critical relationships, internally and externally;
- Leveraging and further extending a network of external stakeholders;
- Contract management with a range of service providers; and
- Advocating publicly for BNTAC and our services.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Previous CEO or senior executive experience, with a history in effective leadership including board reporting with an indigenous and/or land management organisation.
- Previous experience in establishing community based service delivery organisation.
- Strong financial management skills
- A track record in leading an organisation through strategy implementation and growth
Highly desirable
- An excellent national network across private and community sectors.
- Entrepreneurial and an advocate with a track record in delivering outcomes including delivering strong teams and a network of engaged stakeholders and members.
- A strategic driver with the ability to raise organisation/brand awareness and engagement amongst members
- A unique ability to engage and motivate teams, both locally and regionally
- Thorough understanding of land management;
- Some experience as company or brand's spokesperson is desirable
- Your sector experience will be highly regarded, alternatively highly networked in corporate or government sector experience will be essential.
