The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) leads the development, planning and deliver of comprehensive primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in South East Queensland.
The focus of IUIH Aged Care team is to work with the local Indigenous community and relevant key stakeholders to increase access to comprehensive care and provide well-coordinated, quality in home care services to eligible aged care clients.
About the Role?
The Bus Driver / Community Support Worker will provide as assigned, Client Care program support across a range of in transport and group respite activities in Aged Care and Disability Services. This will include logistics of planning transport and supporting clients to transport to and from Group Respite programs, and to support Group Respite staff in delivering programs, including supporting Elders for Centre Based Respite as well as social outings and attending cultural events.
The role is a dual role and the successful applicant will be required to provide professional, courteous, and safe transportation, including group transports by bus (small coach 22 seats), as well as supporting the Elders in group respite programs and activities.
A part of your day to day duties will involve:
- Enable transport and participate in group programs including social outings and cultural events
- Transport planning and delivery to ensure timely pick up and transporting of clients to and from home, for Group Respite programs and as well as in line with client requirements, i.e. other medical and health appointments, as scheduled
- Ensure clients are safely escorted on and off the bus/transport vehicle in a safe and efficient way
- Work actively with clients in accordance with Client Care Plans
- Assist with general client care, including undertake personal care, domestic assistance, social support, respite, meals and transport activities
- Provide daily assistance to clients by supporting them to maintain their independence to remain in their own home
- Provide support services and care assistance to clients in their homes, according to the assessed needs as specified in their care plans in line with level of Certification and standard operating procedures
- Assist in the planning, implementing, reviewing and evaluating programs
- Assist clients to develop skills and abilities within the framework of the program
About You?
Essentials:
- Valid Disability Worker Screening Check (Yellow Card)
- Light Rigid (LR) Queensland Driver’s Licence
- Current Criminal History Check
- A minimum of 6 to 12 months experience in a similar home, community, and disability care role
- Ability to understand transport schedules and coordinate transport appointments in line with client needs
- Ability to always exercise a “Duty of Care” when working with clients
- Demonstrated excellent driving record and experience with bus transport services
- Demonstrated skill and/or ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons.
- An understanding of the health and social issues impacting upon indigenous people in the area
- Demonstrate respect and understanding of client issues including cultural appropriateness and anti-discrimination
- Demonstrated computer literacy with experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, databases including Icare, email and the internet
- Must be up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster vaccinations, according to ATAGI Standards, prior to commencement
Desirable, but not mandatory:
- Previous experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
- Minimum Cert III in Individual Support, or willingness to complete
