This position will be central to supporting the organisation to host a United Nations mandated Pacific climate conference, the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform Pacific Regional Gathering and the Indigenous Decision-Making Workshop on Climate Mitigation, Adaption and Capacity Building. It requires a solid knowledge of planning and implementing community projects with reporting and project management experience.
The position will build and strengthen Indigenous relationships and support participation across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and Indigenous peoples across the Pacific region.
It is preferable that the position has an interest in and knowledge of climate mitigation, adaptation and Indigenous capacity building. An understanding of environmental and climate issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Indigenous peoples across the Pacific region is a distinct advantage.
This position will be responsible for developing Project Plans related to identified project priorities as determined by the CEO or IPO Elders and Strategic Committee. This will require working with the CEO and Finance officer to provide detailed reports on identified projects and outcomes, both domestically and internationally.
In addition, this position will also develop and drive the IPO’s communication and media strategies and oversea their implementation, create content and moderate social media accounts and collaborate with the fund raising and campaign teams to support engagement of initiatives.
Further, this position will also advertise and organise registrations and the recording of virtual training being offered by the IPO and support the hosting of webinars organised by the IPO to inform the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and broader Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, where relevant, on key issues and themes identified by the CEO or Executive Board.
This position will require capacity to navigate complex political and social issues and communicate them clearly and simply. Skills and interest in graphic design, photography and videography and capacity to support the maintenance of website content to maintain an IPO media presence across a range of social media formats.
The community Engagement Officer will also support IPO spokespeople to participate in policy debates in the media, supporting the development narrative and messaging on identified issues. This will require the development of appropriate media packages, press releases, opinion pieces and media briefings and develop, maintain and continue to build media contact lists. It will also require an understanding of media cycles, news hooks and angles to place stories and an understanding of social media formats and content, across a range of formats.
Please Note the IPO considers being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this position, as specified under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
