ABOUT THE ROLE

This position will be central to supporting the organisation to host a United Nations mandated Pacific climate conference, the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform Pacific Regional Gathering and the Indigenous Decision-Making Workshop on Climate Mitigation, Adaption and Capacity Building. It requires a solid knowledge of planning and implementing community projects with reporting and project management experience.

The position will build and strengthen Indigenous relationships and support participation across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and Indigenous peoples across the Pacific region.

It is preferable that the position has an interest in and knowledge of climate mitigation, adaptation and Indigenous capacity building. An understanding of environmental and climate issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Indigenous peoples across the Pacific region is a distinct advantage.

This position will be responsible for developing Project Plans related to identified project priorities as determined by the CEO or IPO Elders and Strategic Committee. This will require working with the CEO and Finance officer to provide detailed reports on identified projects and outcomes, both domestically and internationally.

In addition, this position will also develop and drive the IPO’s communication and media strategies and oversea their implementation, create content and moderate social media accounts and collaborate with the fund raising and campaign teams to support engagement of initiatives.

Further, this position will also advertise and organise registrations and the recording of virtual training being offered by the IPO and support the hosting of webinars organised by the IPO to inform the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and broader Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, where relevant, on key issues and themes identified by the CEO or Executive Board.

This position will require capacity to navigate complex political and social issues and communicate them clearly and simply. Skills and interest in graphic design, photography and videography and capacity to support the maintenance of website content to maintain an IPO media presence across a range of social media formats.

The community Engagement Officer will also support IPO spokespeople to participate in policy debates in the media, supporting the development narrative and messaging on identified issues. This will require the development of appropriate media packages, press releases, opinion pieces and media briefings and develop, maintain and continue to build media contact lists. It will also require an understanding of media cycles, news hooks and angles to place stories and an understanding of social media formats and content, across a range of formats.

Duties & Requirements

  • Build and strengthen Indigenous relationships and support the IPOs engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Indigenous peoples across the Pacific region.
  • Prepare high quality press releases, social media content and presentations for IPO staff on identified priorities.
  • Develop manage and advise on communication strategies, media strategies and oversee their implementation, including political campaigns, fund raising and reporting initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain social media content, moderate and manage the organisation’s web presence, including drafting content across a range of formats, directing IT sub-contractors and engagement with on-line communities.
  • Work with the CEO and Finance Manager to provide detailed reports on identified projects and outcomes, both domestically and internationally.
  • Develop and manage the IPOs virtual advertising and selection of opportunities to attend United Nations mechanisms or IPO meetings.
  • Organise the hosting of advertising, registrations and recordings of webinars organised by the IPO to inform the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and broader no- Indigenous communities, where relevant, on key issues and themes identified by the CEO or Executive Board.
  • Support the IPO to develop narrative and messaging on identified issues, such as the Voice, deaths in custody, racial justice, legislative reform and self-determination.
  • Support IPO spokespeople to participate in policy debates in the media.
  • Develop appropriate media packages, press releases, opinion pieces and media briefings and
  • develop, maintain and continue to build media contact lists.
  • Possess an understanding of media cycles, news hooks and angles to place stories and an understanding of social media formats and content, across a range of formats.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, current policy debates and issues impacting Indigenous peoples.
  • Excellent written communication skills and experience researching issues, including the ability to prepare press releases, social media content and presentations for IPO staff on identified priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and moderating virtual content for social media accounts and engaging with on-line communities and creating and maintaining website content and media presence across a range of social media formats.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communication and media strategies and overseeing their implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience developing virtual advertising and selection processes, advertising, registrations and recordings of webinars organised by the IPO to inform the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and broader no-Indigenous communities, where relevant, on key issues and themes identified by the CEO or Executive Board.
  • Capacity to navigate complex political and social issues and communicate them clearly and simply and draft presentation materials on advocacy concerns.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in project management, including the ability to manage IT contractors to ensure effective project delivery, with outstanding organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects related to identified priorities as determined by the CEO.
  • Experience developing media packages, press releases, opinion pieces and media briefings, with an understanding of media cycles, news hooks and angles to place stories and capacity to respond to emerging issues in a fast-paced and pressured political environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and as part of a cross-functional team, and a willingness to take initiative where appropriate.

Highly Desirable

  • A knowledge of climate mitigation, adaptation and Indigenous capacity building and United Nations processes to address climate change.
  • Skills and interest in graphic design, photography and videography and the broadcasting and use of such materials.
