Accommodation Support Worker

HWS is state funded by Department of Human Services and has been operating since 1974. We are one of the first women’s shelters established in Australia and we provide a safe and confidential service for women and children experiencing homelessness and/or domestic violence.

HWS currently provides an onsite supported accommodation model.

Position objective

The primary role of the Accommodation Support Worker is to provide responsive client service support as required and to undertake general caretaking of the Hobart Women’s Shelter. 

The position works mainly alone and involves shift work including a combination of morning (8am –10am), afternoon (4.30pm – 10pm) and sleepover (10pm – 8.00am). 

These hours extend across both weekdays and weekends/public holidays and involves on call between the hours of 10am and 4.30 pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Relevant Diploma or Cert. lV qualification
  • Experience in social housing, supported accommodation or other relevant community service

Essential

  1. Demonstrated ability to work within, and contribute to, a dynamic team-based environment.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with clients who exhibit confronting, aggressive and/or care seeking behaviour.
  3. Sound computer skills including familiarity with the use of databases.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently and plan work tasks to balance competing demands.
  5. Knowledge of multi-disciplinary issues relating to homelessness such as: poverty, unemployment, health, family violence, substance and alcohol misuse, mental health and other social factors that impact on vulnerable or at-risk women.
  6. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to set personal boundaries and provide consistent standards of service delivery in line with HWS policies and procedures.
  8. Understanding of service delivery standards such as privacy and confidentiality, duty of care and professional ethics. 

Other essential requirements

  1. To be female.
  2. Flexible availability.
  3. Satisfactory Australian Police and Working with Vulnerable People checks and disclosure of any pending charges.
  4. First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
