Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for a one-year consultancy to assist the Development and Outreach Department with developing a fundraising strategy in Australia and to facilitate events leading up to and including the Sydney Annual Dinner.  The consultant will report to the Australia Director and will be based in Sydney. This is a part-time consultancy, with the possibility of becoming full time after six months.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Australian Director to implement a major gift fundraising strategy focusing on Sydney and Melbourne;
  2. Working with members of the Australia Committee to oversee the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Australia, with a primary focus on Human Rights Watch’s annual Voices for Justice events in Sydney and Melbourne in April 2015. Hold at least four additional cultivation events in Sydney and Melbourne;
  3. Build relationships with Australia Committee members.
  4. Provide an outreach strategy that will outline a method for re-engaging prior contacts, identifying new targets, and increasing attendance at the annual dinner by at least 25 percent.
  5. Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters, lay the groundwork for an Australian base of financial support by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from donors in Australia;
  6. Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new prospects, existing donors and Australia Committee members; create and track detailed donor lists, fundraising and expenses;
  7. Manage a communication strategy and calendar of activities to include electronic information, meetings and briefings;
  8. Facilitate post-event evaluation and other follow-up activities and initiating a debriefing from which an action plan with be developed outlining next step.

Qualifications:

Education: An undergraduate degree in related field is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable.

Experience: Prior event production experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Fundraising or relationship management experience, with proven success in creating and managing fundraising programs is required.
  2. Experience managing high-level relationships is required.
  3. Demonstrated experience overseeing large events is required.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.
  5. Creativity, initiative, self-motivation, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
  7. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials and external media partners are required.
  9. Experience presenting issues to the media and policymakers is desirable.
  10. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably the Raiser’s Edge) and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
  11. A willingness to maintain spreadsheets, write correspondence, and do some degree of administrative work is a must.
